The Writer Is Me

I am a writer.

I have never won any awards, or been nominated for any, but I am very successful.

I often wonder would I trade my success for an award, and recognition for a Pulitzer or Booker prize, and then think no. I would rather be a successful writer, than an award-winning one living from paycheck to paycheck. This means that I have to write, and these days I find that very easy.

I started off doing handwritten stories, then progressed to a typewriter, which I found more difficult as I am always making mistakes, and typewriters don't have spell checkers or grammar tools.

The next step was a word processor and now I have a computer and other devices that almost write my stories for me, well they keep me reasonably on track but my tools sometimes annoy the hell out of me, but it means that my books are almost perfect when I submit them for publication.

The Dream Is A Nightmare

I don't if it's a deadline, or something else but every night I have the same nightmarish dream.

I am at a desk with a typewriter, and I am writing for my new book. I know I have to maintain five thousand words a day, otherwise, I will fall behind, and I do not want to do that, and my fans do not want me to do that either. They write to me and my publishers asking when the next book in this series will be released for publication.

So I type and as I finish each page I put them on a pile on my desk, to let the ink dry, and then are ready for filing and collating. I have been writing all day, although this is just a dream, so I have only been asleep for a few hours, and I finish my work for the day and then take the pages ready to file.

There is something wrong.

Something terribly wrong.

Terribly wrong for me, the writer.

I look at all the pages, that I have spent the whole day typing and capturing my story for the book, and every page is blank. They look like they have not been touched by the typewriter.

As I look in horror the pages start to burn and I have to drop them and they are consumed by flames. I remember that this happened yesterday and I knwo that this will happen tomorrow.

I then wake, shocked and worried.

I get up, go to my computer and start it up.

I have not used a typewriter in over thirty years, and I never want to use one ever again, but I want to make sure that the work I have done for my forthcoming book is still there.

I bring up the file and everything is there, spell-checked and grammar-checked.

All is good but I know that nightmare will be here again tonight and I will wake up and check my file on my computer once again.

I have it backed up on a stick and in the cloud, just in case the worst does happen.

My fans and publisher would not be happy if the new book was lost.

Enjoyed your story. I can't imagine the pressure that one would feel as a famous author. That is a nightmare! Note, perhaps a typo: "I loak at all the pages". Cheers!
