Modern-day witches don't live in ditches or scurry around singing a song. They are never just heard of at Halloween. They are everyday witches that live like you or me. They live just down the street, on the lake, or in a cabin in the woods. Our neighbors.

Those everyday witches are with us at ceremony. Working side by side us don't you see. Those everyday witches can even marry someone close in matrimony.

And what can we expect on Halloween? We can expect fun and flair. I like the stories we are told of good witches, never to do bad. But they are not what this story is about. This is not what I am telling you about today. I am going to tell you a story about Sally Ann.

Sally Ann was a witch that grew up in one of the better homes in town. She had all the comforts. She had both parents and a brother. She had a dog and a cat. And of course her cat was a black cat.

Her cat was called Samantha.

Samantha believed that she was a witch. She believed she was turned into a black cat by a spell that she wanted gone! She believed that a very powerful witch had cast this spell and she lived just next door.

When Sally Ann was young, her neighbor brought over Samantha as a gift. How could her parents say no to a gift for her? They couldn't so Sally Ann loved her Sam! They played and were known for hunting mice and playing with them until they were cooked nice.

Sally Ann couldn't stick around for the eating part. Sam would grin and bare it. She knew it wasn't her favorite diet, but it was something about being a black cat that thrilled her about catching and eating her catch!

Sally Ann went off to work on a book of spells. She wanted so much to have a best friend and even though Sam was great, she wasn't like her.

She thought she would practice on Sam once she learned the spell.

Her mother was the other witch in the house, so she decided to ask her mother for help with the spell. Her mother said, "Honey, it is very important to not practice a spell that may have consequences that you can not undue."

As Sam sat and listened, she knew exactly what to do.

Sally Ann quickly realized there would be no help from her mother. She went back over to the book and found a page open to a spell for uncasting anothers spell. She thought just maybe she could try this spell. After all, it shouldn't hurt anyone and what spell would she undue?

Sam was so excited. It is the thing she wanted most in the world.

Once memorized she turned to find Sam right by her feet. She waved her wand over Sam and said the words. "Bibity, babity boo, I wish to undo you. This isn't for me but for you Boo!"

Walla, what appeared in front of her eyes was a full-grown woman with green eyes, black hair, black lips, and a black dress. Sally Ann quickly realized that she was going to get into trouble now!

What Sally Ann didn't realize is that her mother maybe didn't have to know. She could take Sam out into the world and she would quickly find a place to go. She would fit right into the season if she put a witch's hat on her head! Would this work?

Then Sally Ann thought, how ever could she put a person out into the world that was a cat for many years? At least five years since she had been with her. Her mother wasn't home and it was probably for the best.

She quickly ran next door while Samantha was looking and trying on things to wear from her mother's closet!

Her neighbor Ms. Sarah listened carefully and then went with Sally Ann to her house. When Samantha saw her she quickly squealed like a cat, drew her arms back, and started to say something when all of a sudden Ms. Sarah threw some powder into the air that froze Sam where she stood.

She then looked at Sally Ann and said, "We will make a deal with her to stay around for the season, and if she can behave herself, she can maybe stay with me. You can then visit whenever you wish. And if she can't be good, then she will have to go back to her place as Samantha."

"What do you think?" said Ms. Sarah. "By the way the powder won't last for long."

Sally Ann said, "Can we try that. I am so sorry for doing this. I was just practicing spells. I really didn't know my next-door neighbor might help me with that. My mother has no time and is fearful that something like this may happen.

And just as she finished her words the powder wore off. Before anyone could say anything, Samantha cowered in a corner. When Ms. Sarah explained her choices Sam said, "I will gladly be kind and loving to all as I have learned this with being Sally Ann's best friend."

She went on to say, "I'm not sure I can live with you Ms. Sarah, but maybe until I can prove myself and find my own place in the world. Besides I hate eating mice, but it is just something I have had to do!"

So Sally Ann went trick or treating with her new neighbor. They both wore witches' hats. They laughed and had so much fun with all the other witches and goblins out in the world at this time of year!

Sally Ann told her mother that Samantha was lost and she might find her way back but she was hoping she didn't. Her mother gave her a very strange look and said, "I'm okay with it, either way, Sally Ann. Many find their way back and many don't. We will probably know soon enough."

And with that she winked at Sally Ann! Sally Ann somehow knew she was forgiven!
