Husk was getting annoyed as hell at his “boss,” and wanted to punch his stupid ass face in.

But, he had a contract with him for his soul. The always smiling fucker had a legal and mortal hold over his immortal soul so he had to deal with a lot of shit.

“So, you think I gotta chance here? Is it possible to get Angel back his soul?” Husk asked.

Alastor grinned with a shit-eating look, and answered dryly: “Hmmm. No.” He saw Husk frown and tapped on his shoulder. “But, maybe! Who knows. At least, it won't be boring to find out.”

“You and your, ‘entertainment,’ bullshit… ugh,” Husk quipped sarcastically under his breath. At least Alastor was willing to do a new deal with him. “So, you'll give me my soul back in exchange for what again?”

Alastor nodded, “You must still work here at the hotel, and never leave it for anything else. It's your job to care for the damned no matter what. And to hold up the mantle for myself when the time is right.” Alastor’s staticky voice crawled in Husk’s ear like a sticky worm. He knew there was a trick somewhere in the wording but he didn't care.

He needed to do this. For Angel. For Anthony.

“So… do we have a deal?”

Husk felt bile rising to his throat but nodded, shaking his hand.

The atmosphere around them turned rusty red and thick with smoke, which disappeared after a few hectic moments.

Husk coughed, but the air cleared abd he was now feeling rejuvenated and alive with purpose. Now, he had to talk to Angel and then… Val.

He didn't like to do things behind people’s back. Even nice things. He wanted to lay out the plan and see if Angel was on board.

Later that day, after several group exercises with Charlie, Vaggie and Nifty, he went to check on Angel. He had told Charlie he needed to rest before work and couldn't do anything for his redemption today. He was not letting Charlie or Vaggie know his plans as of yet.

He'd have to wait until Angel came back home later the next morning.

Husk saw Angel was about to head off, and stopped him to say goodbye.

“Angel, you're still coming to see me after work, right?” Husk whispered.

Angel softened his aggravated expression. “I'd love to, Husker.”

Husk smiled widely, “I can't wait. See you then. Be safe,” He said and gave Angel a side hug.

Angel felt like melting into his arms right then and there. “You too,” Angel whispered back, almost touching face to face as he was near the others ear.

“I got something to tell ya, Anthony…” Husk said as his neck became hot from how close Angel was.

Angel looked at him expectantly, “What is it?”

“We will talk when you're home. Alright?”

Angel nodded. “Deal. See ya!” he blew Husk a kiss and waved goodbye.

Husk caught the kiss and Angel winked, leaving the hotel.

“Ohh. Now I see what you're doing.”

The staticky radio voice shook Husk, and he turned around to see Alastor creepily watching him.

“Were you just fucking watching us the whole time?!”

Alastor grinned wider. “You have the puppy love for that effeminate fellow, don't you, Husker? Or should I say, he's the cat’s meow for you, isn't he? The bee’s knees?”

Husk growled. “Your stupid, tired insults don't bother me.”

“On the contrary, my good man. I don't mean to insult, but comment on the reality. You got a thing for that swinger. It's not like it's a well kept secret.”

Husk frowned. “I don't care about that either. I just want Angel to be safe.”

“Safe isn't entertaining. But, you may manage to keep him from being caught up in a dangerous dance for his soul being lost forever. In the end, no one is safe in hell.”

“I'll try to remember that, Al.”

“It would be wise to do so, my good man,” Alastor bowed. “Well, have a nice day!” his voice deepened at the end and he slithered off.

Husk nodded. Alastor was the only one who could make something so benign sound terrifying.

At least he had his soul back. For now.

I hope he gets to keep his soul. Waiting for the next chapter!

  • This makes me think of Giuseppe Chiara & the movies based on his life, "Silence" & "The Mission", in that willingness to give up that which you hold most dear for the sake of another. Beautiful, compelling & gripping, Melissa.
