So Much for an Early Night's Sleep. Top Story - August 2026.
Nellie couldn’t help but whistle as she headed to the bathroom. It was 10:45 pm, and for once, she was going to bed early. Nellie usually went to bed anywhere between 11:30 pm and midnight, and if she was being particularly naughty, 12:30 am. Only to have to wake up early for work. It wasn’t that she didn’t constantly try to have a better night schedule. Nellie was actually doing better than she used to. Generally speaking. It was just that after a busy day where she didn’t have much time to herself, it was just too easy for Nellie to surrender to the temptation to stay up past her bedtime so she could have a ‘few’ extra minutes of reading, YouTube, etc. Nellie thankfully was still getting enough sleep to function, but she knew that her body needed more in order to actually be well-rested.

My Last Call. Top Story - August 2026.
Tuesday nights were always the same. Small groups of people meandered in and found a table or a booth. Individuals normally migrated to a stool at the bar where they knew Ollie. The bartender was always available to engage in a friendly conversation or to lend a sympathetic ear. Friday and Saturday nights were too busy for him to socialize, but as for the rest of the week, he never ignored a customer’s need for a drink and good chat.

Food is Fuel. Fuel is Poison.. Top Story - August 2026.
RING-A-LING! Life chimes in at 30. It starts small. A subtle warning that change is coming, but I ignore it. As any self-respecting man who has taken life for granted would. I continue eating. Taking my fill of the same foods I always eat. Have always eaten.

Effie & Simon. Top Story - August 2026.
I am at it again. This thing, it fits me, tight, like a glove. Tighter. Like a second skin. My sister isn't here tonight. She has not been here for several nights. She's so waif-like, now, so whisper-thin, that she's almost not anywhere at all. With the shadowy circles under her eyes so dark you could almost believe they were bruises. Maybe they are. May he hit her again.

Chapter One. Top Story - July 2026.
Last Call - The Prompt: Write a story inspired by the phrase "last call." "Last call" can mean different things depending on who's listening. It might be the end of a night, one final opportunity, or the moment someone realizes they're almost out of time. Write a story inspired by the phrase "last call." You can interpret it however you like. Set it in a bar, an airport, a hospital, a small town, or somewhere entirely unexpected. Focus on what happens when the clock is running out. Whether your characters seize the moment, hesitate, or let it slip away, let that sense of urgency drive the story.
