There's No Words to Describe the Feeling.

She looked at him, bloodshot eyes damp from the salted tears sliding down her cheeks into the inner corner of her mouth as she tried to hold the rest of them back.

He looked back at her while taking in the sound of the tick-tock from behind him. All he wanted to do was to hold her, to comfort her, to make her feel better than he was in this moment.

Somehow, they both knew what was coming. They both knew the words that they wanted to speak, but couldn't find the courage to utter them. The moment those words left either mouth, the worst would happen.

The cracked window slightly muted the woosh of vehicles from the main road just at the edge of the property, while mixed with the crackle of the wooden logs from the fireplace masked the sound of breaking hearts ever so slightly, but her face couldn't hide her grief. As much as she tried, the tears kept rolling, as she felt them soak her collar she stopped trying to wipe them away.

They sat on opposite sides of the room listening to the cars and fireplace and hearts shattering from inside each others chests. Occasionally, they would glance at the other one, such sorrow in their eyes, wishing they could go back to the previous day when these emotions weren't as prevalent, wishing the pain would evaporate into nothingness.

His eyes started to fill, as he took a deep breath in, the scent of cinnamon filled his lungs from the cookies she had baked a few days before, his mind filled with the memories of happier times and he lowered his head in defeat, acceptance of the situation overtaking everything else. He knew what he had to do, he just didn't want to. He looked at her once again, her ivory complexion glowing in the evening, autumnal sun through the window she sat by. Her chocolate coloured hair had a red tinge to it, which he adored. Ignoring the fact she looked so sad, she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen.

Once his head lowered again, she took her turn to gaze at him. She focused on his coffee coloured eyes that were so big she could still see them without being that close. She felt more tears stream. Ignoring them, her eyes fixated on his hands. His thumbs were twiddling around each other, not sure what to do, it seemed. His perfectly crooked nose shone in the firelight to his right, forcing her eyes to look over the rest of his shadowed face and she felt her heart fall further into the pit of her stomach.

I can't lose her. I can't lose her. I can't lose her. He thought, the words swirling around his consciousness like a mantra he would never forget.

I can't leave him. I can't leave him. I can't leave him. Her mind repeated those four words, constantly on a loop as if the record player in the corner of their bedroom was broken.

The pair stayed silent for the remainder of the day, until the moon glowed bright enough to light up the room so they could still see each other, even without the electricity being turned on. He turned his head so he was looking directly at her, while she kept her eyes on the mantle; too afraid to look at him because she knew what would happen if she did.

The pain she felt not looking at him was consuming. It physically hurt to keep her face and eyes still and away from the man she had loved for so long. All she wanted to do was run to him, kiss him and be wrapped in his warm embrace for eternity. She knew he was looking at her, and she knew he felt the same; it was felt from across the room, a word never uttered.
