The outside world was unknown to her, but she could see a glimpse of it through the window in his room. Her name is Cody and Jimmy her dad was one of the few people authorized to go outside. Jimmy is a scientist that studies plants. Specifically, how plants survive in harsh climates.

The world has been hit by an asteroid that has thrown the World into chaos. The climate is screwed. We might as well be living on Mars. For the first few years the people that survived the initial impact lived in bunkers the UN setup for people. The only way Cody and the other people could see the outside World was through an observation dome that was built into the bunker. It was not worth going into the observation dome at first. All you could see was black sky, no people, and a few very small insects that survived.

Luckily for everyone, the World knew this was coming and there was livestock and plants setup in the bunkers. It was enough food for everyone for 3 years. In year 2 they started letting a select group of people leave the bunker. They had to wear space suits. Most of the people were construction workers and scientists.

The construction workers were tasked with building dome communities. They had to construct the domes and build all the structures. Scientists like Jimmy were tasked with figuring out how to grow food in the environment and if they could not do that, they needed to figure out how to make a greenhouse work.

Some of the animals could live in the domes once the scientist figured out how to grow grass for them. The construction people were also in charge of finding water. They dug a bunch of wells until they hit a number of underground streams. They built the domes over the wells. They also built filters into the houses and buildings they built.

You and your father are one of the first to leave the bunker and one of the lucky ones that get a house instead of an apartment.

You get to watch all the people slowly come into the dome communities. You like that you are finally seeing different people from different bunkers. It got boring seeing the same people for 3 years.

You are finally outside, but a long way from being free. You can see the other dome communities but cannot get to them. You can see the World outside the domes, it is still desolate.

You are happy to be in a house. You and your dad can spend time alone together. You have been surrounded by other teen girls for 3 years. Some like Rebecca have become your best friend. You even asked your dad to get Rebecca's family into the same dome as you. The two bright spots in your life are having time to spend with your dad and having your best friend close.

You spend years looking out your father's window at the outside World. When you turn 18 you are given permission to start helping your dad outside the dome. You help him plant fruits and veggies to see what will grow outside the dome. Squish and tomatoes seem to do the best.

It takes 25 years for the air to be breathable outside the domes. In that time animals have adapted to the environment and plants have been growing outside the domes for 10 years. It feels weird to live outside the domes after so long inside them.

You will never forget looking out your father's window all those years ago.
