The Judgment of Solomon

Once upon a time, lived two Mothers.

Both a harlot. Both impregnated. Both gave birth.

One mother smothered her child by accident wee hours of the night, while the other was asleep.

By morning, the mother awoke to the other mother holding her child.

Looking down at the dead child the mother screamed and said, “what have you done?”

“Have you taken my child for yourself?”

“This is my child, you smothered yours while you were a slumber ” said the mother holding the baby.

The two maidens began to cause quite a ruckus in the court and was immediately escorted to the King.

“Your Majesty, may I approach the throne?” asked the court guard.

“Come forth. What is your request?”

“I have two of the court maidens here that both became with child. Upon the night of one, the child did not make it. But the other did.”

…continuing, “ both of the harlots claim the child is theirs.”

The king just stared.

“And what is it you wish of me to do about the two harlots?”

“Your Majesty, they are disturbing the peace of the court.”

“Bring them in.”

Entering the court the two maidens approach. One is holding a baby.

“Bring me the child.”

The servant guard brings forth the child handing him over to the king.

Cradling the child, the king looks at the crying baby’s face and then at the two mothers.

Then looks back at the child once more.

Then again at the women.

“Whose child is this?” the king asks, knowing already who the child belongs to.

“Mine!” they both shouted.

“Sir, her child died, and she’s trying to take my baby from me while I slept!” said one mother.

“Blasphemy! She’s fibbing! The baby is mine! Look at him we have the same nose”said the other.

Glancing at the child, the king notices no resemblance in the nose but that very well the child could belong to both dark featured women.

A moment of silence passes. The king motions over the court gaurd.

He hands the baby to the guard and whispers in his ear.

Then abruptly out loud and proud, the king states he has come to a conclusion.

“These women say the baby belongs to both of them. In that case, spear the child in half and give one portion to each maiden.”

As commanded by the whisper, the guard is given a sword, raises it over the child. The mother on the right charges, stumbling over her own two feet face planting to her knees, in a gutter roar, flooded with tears while the other one stood in shock. Her bowels yearned in desperation begging the king to just give the child to the other woman but pleaded not to kill it.

The other mother, full of disdain, green-eyed, and lofty, advised to split the child and give each the portion per the kings clever request.

The king smiled at the guardsman in confirmation that his plan worked.

“Give the child to her. The first mother”pointing to the one on her knees.

“She is the child’s mother”

Nice work. Hooked me in immediately. :)

  • Gosh this was so scary but I'm so glad it ended well. Both Sharon and Lana have mentioned Solomon but I don't know who that is. I gotta Google and educate myself, lol. Loved your story!

I was hoping for some twist in the story! But Solomon was indeed wise.
