The Stumbling of Love in the Rainy Season

Fiction

By Ajeng PermataPublished 11 days ago 4 min read

It was the kind of day where the sky couldn't decide whether to drizzle or pour. The streets glistened with the remnants of a morning shower, and the air was thick with the earthy scent of rain. Maya had always loved the rainy season, finding a peculiar comfort in the rhythmic patter of raindrops against her window. However, this particular rainy season would be etched in her memory for an entirely different reason.

Maya worked at a quaint bookstore downtown, a cozy spot with creaky wooden floors and shelves bursting with stories waiting to be discovered. One rainy afternoon, as she was organizing a display of poetry books, the doorbell chimed, signaling a new customer. Maya glanced up, expecting the usual rush of damp coats and umbrellas, but instead, she saw him – a man with an air of casual confidence, his eyes scanning the room with curiosity.

“Hi there,” he greeted with a warm smile. “I’m looking for something to read on a rainy day.”

Maya’s heart did a little somersault. “You’ve come to the right place,” she replied, matching his smile. “Do you have a particular genre in mind?”

“Not really,” he shrugged. “Surprise me.”

Maya loved a challenge. She quickly picked out a few of her favorites, books that had brought her comfort on many a stormy evening. As she handed them over, she couldn’t help but notice the way his eyes lit up with interest.

“Thanks, I’m Alex, by the way,” he said, extending a hand.

“Maya,” she replied, shaking his hand. “Enjoy your reading.”

Over the next few weeks, Alex became a regular at the bookstore. Each visit, he’d chat with Maya about the books he’d read and ask for new recommendations. Their conversations flowed effortlessly, covering everything from classic literature to their favorite rainy day activities. It wasn’t long before they started spending time together outside the bookstore, grabbing coffee at the little café down the street or taking walks in the rain, umbrellas in hand.

One particularly stormy evening, as they huddled under the awning of the café, Alex turned to Maya with a thoughtful expression. “You know, I never used to like the rain much,” he admitted. “But now, it feels different.”

Maya raised an eyebrow. “Different how?”

“Like it’s not just a gloomy inconvenience anymore,” he said, smiling. “It’s something to look forward to.”

Maya’s heart fluttered at his words. She had grown to cherish their rainy day adventures and the easy camaraderie they shared. As the rain poured around them, she felt a warmth that had nothing to do with the weather.

However, as with most good things, their budding romance wasn’t without its hurdles. Maya learned that Alex was planning to move to another city for a job opportunity, something he had been working towards for years. The news hit her like a cold splash of rain, dampening the happiness she had found in their time together.

One evening, as they walked through the park, Maya finally broached the subject. “So, when do you leave?”

“Next month,” Alex replied, his voice tinged with regret. “I didn’t want to bring it up because… well, because of us.”

Maya nodded, trying to keep her emotions in check. “I get it. It’s a great opportunity for you.”

“Yeah, but it also means leaving behind everything here,” he said, his eyes searching hers for a reaction.

Maya took a deep breath. “I don’t want to hold you back, Alex. You’ve worked so hard for this.”

“But what about us?” he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

Maya’s heart ached at the uncertainty in his eyes. “I don’t know,” she admitted. “I guess we’ll have to see if we can weather the storm.”

In the weeks leading up to his departure, they made the most of their time together. They laughed, they cried, and they held onto each other as the rain continued to fall, a bittersweet backdrop to their fleeting romance.

On the day Alex was set to leave, they met one last time at the bookstore. The rain outside was relentless, mirroring the turmoil in their hearts. As they stood by the door, Alex took Maya’s hands in his.

“I’ll miss you,” he said, his voice thick with emotion.

“Me too,” Maya replied, tears streaming down her face.

They shared one last kiss, a tender and heartbreaking farewell. As Alex walked away, Maya watched him go, her heart heavy yet hopeful. The rain poured down, washing away the tears but not the memories.

Months passed, and Maya found herself thinking about Alex every time it rained. She threw herself into her work, finding solace in the familiar comfort of the bookstore. One rainy afternoon, as she was closing up, the doorbell chimed. She looked up, expecting a stray customer, but her heart skipped a beat.

There, drenched and smiling, stood Alex. “I couldn’t stay away,” he said, his eyes shining with love.

Maya ran into his arms, the rain outside a distant memory. They had weathered the storm, and now, they had a new season to look forward to – one filled with love and endless possibilities.
