Hao had grown up in the rural village of Yinshan, where his father taught him the art of butchering animals. It was a necessary skill for survival, but it wasn't one that Hao enjoyed. He felt uneasy every time he held a squirming chicken or a thrashing fish.

Years later, after moving to Los Angeles and starting a family, Hao's son Tommy introduced him to a different kind of animal story. They read together from a tactile picture book, with swatches of faux fur and sequins that brought the animals to life. Tommy's imagination was boundless, and he loved to ask his father questions about the animals they read about.

Hao began to feel a new connection to the animals in the book, a connection that was more gentle and compassionate than the one he had learned as a child. He wondered if he could learn to butcher animals in a different way, one that would minimize their suffering and honor their lives.

So, he enrolled in a course on ethical animal butchery. He learned about the importance of quick and humane slaughter, and how to minimize stress for the animals beforehand. He practiced his new skills on a farm, where the animals roamed freely and were treated with respect.

One day, as he was preparing to slaughter a grass carp, he felt a familiar pang of hesitation. But he took a deep breath and reminded himself of what he had learned. He submerged his hand into the tub of water and felt the fish firmly grasp onto his finger. He raised the club, but instead of blindly striking it down, he paused and looked into the fish's eyes. He felt a deep sense of empathy and gratitude for the life that it had given.

He closed his eyes and swung the club down swiftly, ending the fish's life with as much care as he could muster. And in that moment, he realized that he could still hear the animals talk. Not in the literal sense, but in the way that they spoke to his heart and reminded him of the importance of compassion and connection.

From that day on, he continued to hone his skills as an ethical butcher, teaching others about the importance of respecting the animals that nourished us. And while the animals may have been silent in their final moments, their lives and their spirits lived on, in the memories and the lessons that they left behind.

Hao set down the book and rubbed his eyes. Tommy was already fast asleep, his tiny chest rising and falling in a steady rhythm. Hao covered him with a blanket and stood up, his mind still lost in the memories of his childhood. He walked to the living room and sat on the couch, staring at the wall. He wondered if he had made the right decision to leave his village and move to the city.

As a child, he had loved animals and had a special connection with them. He believed that he could hear them talk and understand their emotions. His father, a hardworking farmer, had little patience for his son's fanciful thoughts. He had tried to toughen Hao up by forcing him to help with the butchering of chickens and fish. Hao had been hesitant at first, but his father had berated him for being weak and useless. He had learned to steel his nerves and complete the task quickly, but the experience had left him traumatized.

After he had grown up, Hao had moved to the city and become a software engineer. He had thought he had left his past behind, but the memories still haunted him. He wondered if he could ever regain the ability to hear animals talk or if it was lost forever.

As he sat on the couch lost in thought, he suddenly heard a faint voice. He looked around but saw no one. He heard the voice again, clearer this time. It was coming from outside. He got up and walked to the balcony, where he saw a stray cat sitting on the railing.

"Hello, Hao," the cat said, looking directly at him.

Hao was stunned. He had not heard an animal speak in years. "Hello, cat," he replied cautiously.

"I have a message for you," the cat said. "You have forgotten who you are. You have forgotten your connection to the animals and the land. You have become lost in the city, chasing after material things that do not matter. But it is not too late to find your way back. You must listen to your heart and remember the love you had for all creatures, big and small. Only then will you find true happiness."

With that, the cat leaped off the railing and disappeared into the night. Hao stood there for a moment, stunned, before a feeling of warmth spread through his chest. He realized that the cat was right. He had forgotten who he was and what was important in life. He needed to reconnect with nature and his childhood memories.

The next day, Hao took Tommy to a nearby park and showed him the ducks swimming in the pond. He let Tommy feed them with bread crumbs and watched as his son's face lit up with joy. As he watched the ducks, he suddenly heard their quacks in his mind, as if they were speaking to him. He smiled, realizing that he had regained the ability to hear animals talk.

From that day on, Hao spent more time in nature and less time in front of screens. He started volunteering at an animal shelter and a community garden. He found that the more he connected with nature, the happier he became. He had finally found his way back to his true self, and it was all thanks to a stray cat and a childhood memory.
