The Shadow's Heist
Heist short story for Vocal challenge
John "Shadow" Grayson, an ex-circus acrobat turned infamous thief, set his piercing gaze on his target: the "Star of the Seas." A diamond of unparalleled beauty, nestled under high-tech lasers and layers of impregnable bulletproof glass, resided within the Fort Knox Museum in New York City.
Grayson had painstakingly studied every detail for weeks, rehearsed every laser beam angle, memorized each security guard's pattern. Tonight was the grand performance.
With the grace of a panther, he slipped inside, his body dancing an intricate aerial ballet through the deadly matrix of lasers. At the diamond's protective case, he unveiled a tiny mirror. Carefully angled, it tricked each laser into a belief of undisturbed continuity. With a gloved hand, he lifted the "Star of the Seas".
Suddenly, alarms screamed. Red lights spun in wild disarray. Grayson froze a second.
Emerging from the shadows, a voice chuckled, "Good show, Shadow. But the finale is mine."
Victoria "Vixen" Vale, another thief of renown, had triggered the alarm using a laser disruptor.
As she vanished into the chaos, Grayson revealed the true diamond. He had already switched the Star with a convincing fake.
The finale, indeed, was his.
