Detective Claire Morgan sat in her dimly lit office, her eyes scanning the latest case file. The city of New Haven had been gripped by a series of inexplicable disappearances, and the latest victim was a high-profile journalist named Mark Harris. Known for his investigative prowess, Mark had been digging into the murky dealings of the influential Altair Corporation before he vanished without a trace.

Claire leaned back in her chair, her mind racing. She had a hunch that these disappearances were linked, and that Mark's investigation had uncovered something dangerous. Determined to get to the bottom of it, she decided to start where Mark had left off.

The next morning, Claire visited Mark's apartment. It had already been searched by the police, but she hoped to find something they had missed. As she sifted through his notes and papers, a photograph caught her eye. It showed Mark standing with a woman outside a nondescript building. On the back, Mark had scribbled, "Lydia - key to Altair mystery."

Claire's instincts told her that Lydia was crucial to understanding Mark's disappearance. She ran a quick background check and discovered that Lydia Simmons was an ex-employee of Altair Corporation. Her employment record was spotless, but she had abruptly resigned six months ago. Claire decided to pay Lydia a visit.

Lydia lived in a modest apartment on the outskirts of the city. When Claire knocked on her door, Lydia answered with a wary expression. "I'm Detective Claire Morgan," she said, showing her badge. "I'd like to ask you a few questions about Mark Harris."

Lydia's face paled at the mention of Mark's name, but she stepped aside to let Claire in. They sat in the small living room, Lydia clutching a cup of tea as if for comfort. "I was afraid this would happen," Lydia said quietly. "Mark was getting too close to the truth."

"What truth?" Claire asked, leaning forward.

"Altair Corporation is involved in something sinister," Lydia explained. "They've been conducting illegal experiments on human subjects. Mark found out and was determined to expose them."

Claire's mind raced. If what Lydia was saying was true, it explained a lot. "Do you have any proof?" she asked.

Lydia nodded and handed Claire a USB drive. "Everything is on here. Mark gave it to me for safekeeping. He said if anything happened to him, I should give it to the authorities."

Claire took the drive, her heart pounding. This was the break she needed. She thanked Lydia and left, eager to analyze the data. Back at the station, she plugged the drive into her computer. The files contained detailed reports, video footage, and emails implicating several high-ranking officials at Altair.

Just as she was about to call her captain, her phone rang. It was an unknown number. "Detective Morgan," she answered.

A deep, menacing voice replied, "You should have stayed out of this, Detective. Now you’re in over your head."

The line went dead, and Claire's blood ran cold. She knew she had to act fast. She copied the data onto several drives and sent them to trusted colleagues. Then she called her captain and briefed him on the situation.

That night, Claire couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched. As she drove home, she noticed a black SUV tailing her. She tried to lose it, but the vehicle stayed close. Her heart pounded as she swerved through side streets, finally pulling into an underground parking garage.

She darted into the shadows and waited. The SUV parked, and two men in dark suits got out, scanning the area. Claire knew she was outnumbered, but she couldn’t let them get the evidence. She slipped out her phone and sent a quick message to her captain, revealing her location.

Moments later, the sound of sirens filled the air. The men looked around, panicked, and fled. Claire sighed in relief as police cars surrounded the garage. Her captain approached, and she handed over the drive.

"This isn't over," Claire said, determination in her eyes. "But at least we’ve made a start."

As dawn broke over New Haven, Claire knew the fight against Altair Corporation was just beginning. But with the truth on her side, she was ready for whatever came next.
