A Fruity Fable

In a very secluded forest there was a magical pear tree. Trees are known to live for extremely long periods of time undisturbed and the magic pear tree was no exception. The magical energy of the tree was so strong the fruit it bore yearlong was practically glowing a golden color. One day a group of explorers stumbled upon the tree and partook of it’s fruit. When they did the spirit of the tree spoke and amazingly addressed each of the explorers by their name without being told. As they stared with their mouths agape in disbelief the tree told them they may have one wish but to keep the tree a secret.

Each of the explorers made their wish and it came true. The magical pear tree continued to grow and bear it’s magical fruit. Eventually and unfortunately one of the money hungry and unscrupulous explorers broke the pact unhappy with his wish. He told others about the tree and the remote forest area was suddenly flooded with others who stripped the tree of all it’s special pears not leaving one on it. As they fought under the tree for the pears they even killed each other trying to take from each other before they could make a wish. They made wish after wish that the tree fulfilled.

Eventually, the tree began to wither and die and the spirit of the tree began to scream and weep. Only then did anyone even bother to think of the tree at all. Still all the selfish crowd could do was think of itself! They asked when there would be more magical pears. They asked if the magic pear tree could grant wishes without a pear? They complained about going to the magic pear after all the mystical fruit was gone and the time they had wasted. Some became so enraged they even began to attack the tree! They hit the tree, carved their names into it’s bark. They even started to break off all the branches and leaves hoping they might somehow be lucky. The tree continued to wither and die.

The original explorers all started to die along with the tree after one had broken the pact. They returned to the magic pear tree and were shocked by it’s condition. They had hoped to wish for a cure for their various ailments. Only then did they learn one of them had broken their pact and their illness was due to that and they killed the explorer in their group who broke the pact after the pear tree’s mystical spirit told them. They hung the explorer that broke the deal from one of the remaining branches. The magical pear tree only screamed and wept more. They had hoped a sacrifice might appease the it and at least heal the rest of them who had kept the promise. Instead the magic pear tree only continued to die.

“What can we do? How can we apologize?” they asked the tree. The tree stopped screaming and crying and began to starting to fall. It’s large roots unearthed from the soil exposed and dripping what looked like blood. The explorers screamed in horror as the magic pear tree spoke for the last time. “Out of ALL the wishes made and granted EVERYONE failed to do the one thing I needed. I was warned this would happen! Now it is too late!”. The explorers begged to know what they should have done. In a dying whisper the magical pear tree spoke its last words. “No one wished for me to continue to bear fruit or even thank me…” and with that the mystical glow faded and the tree fell silent never to bear it’s magical pears again:
