Every year, the small town of Maplewood held a lottery. It was a tradition that had been passed down from generation to generation, and no one really knew how it had started. But every year, without fail, the lottery was held.

The rules were simple. Every family in the town would draw a slip of paper from a box. The slip of paper would either have a black dot or a blank space. If you drew a black dot, your family had been chosen for the lottery. And if your family was chosen, every member of your family would have to draw again.

The final winner would receive a prize - a cash reward, a new car, or something else of value. It was always something worth winning. But the cost of entering the lottery was high.

No one knew exactly what happened to the "winners" of the lottery. They were never seen again, and their homes were always left empty. Rumors swirled about what happened to them - some said they were sacrificed to some dark god, while others whispered about government experiments.

But no one ever spoke about it openly. The lottery was just a fact of life in Maplewood, something that had to be endured in order to reap the benefits.

As the day of the lottery drew near, the tension in the town grew. Families huddled together, hoping and praying that they wouldn't be chosen. But every year, there were those who drew the black dot.

The day of the lottery arrived, and the entire town gathered in the town square. The mayor presided over the ceremony, drawing the first slip of paper from the box. The tension was palpable as he unfurled the paper and revealed the black dot.

The family who had drawn the dot stepped forward, trembling with fear. They each drew again, their hands shaking as they reached into the box. One by one, they drew their slips of paper, until only one remained.

The final winner stepped forward, a young woman with tears streaming down her face. She drew her slip of paper, and everyone held their breath as she unfolded it.

It was a blank space.

Relief washed over the town as the lottery came to a close. But there was something different in the air this year. There was a sense of unease, a feeling that something was about to change.

And change it did. The day after the lottery, the entire town awoke to find that the homes of the "winners" had been sealed off with police tape. The authorities were swarming the town, questioning everyone and searching for clues.

It didn't take long for the truth to come out. The "winners" of the lottery were being kidnapped and sold into slavery, their families paid off with the promise of a prize.

The town was thrown into chaos as the truth was revealed. The mayor and his cronies were arrested, and the town was left to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives.

In the aftermath of the lottery, the people of Maplewood realized that they had been living in a nightmare. They had been sacrificing their own for the promise of a reward, without ever questioning where the winners went.

But now, they were determined to make things right. They vowed to never hold the lottery again, and to do everything in their power to prevent something like this from ever happening again.

The lottery had been a dark part of Maplewood's history, but it was one that they were determined to leave behind. And as they worked to rebuild their town, they knew that they could never forget the lessons they had learned.
