Long ago, when the world was still young and the lands were covered in ferns, a magnificent kingdom of birds known as Aviaria made their home in the teeming foothills of the mountains. These birds were no ordinary creatures; they possessed remarkable abilities, including the gift of celestial navigation. They could traverse the skies with grace, soaring high above the clouds, and they knew exactly where to migrate when the winter winds began to ruffle their soft coats of feathers. But it was not always so.

At the heart of Aviaria stood the Great Red Oak, a colossal tree that reached the heavens and housed Aviaria’s Council of Elders. The Council comprised the most esteemed birds, each representing a different species. These learned birds were keepers of the ancient stories. Among them were the venerable Crow, the magesterial Eagle, the playful Hummingbird, the elegant Whooping Crane, and the maternal Dove.

Once every hundred years, a momentous event known as the Starlight Games took place in the valley by the Great Red Oak. During the raucous festivities of musical performances and contests, a rare orange feather would appear on a particular bird of Aviaria, bestowed upon them by the mystical Starlight Spirits of the forest. Once given, this feather changed colors, glimmering blue, green, and violet with celestial radiance.

The Starlight Feather symbolized great importance to the kingdom of Aviaria. It identified the chosen bird as the Celestial Navigator, determining that this special bird could lead the entire Aviaria kingdom in their migration to the elusive Winter Sanctuary. The Winter Sanctuary was said to be a place of eternal warmth, sweet, ripe fruits and berries. Swarms of delicious insects awaited there with abundant of fish in the rivers and lakes. There, the chill of winter could not touch them.

For generations, the birds of Aviaria eagerly awaited the Starlight Games, knowing that the chosen bird would guide them on their great migration. Every bird yearned to be selected by the Starlight Spirits and be granted the honor of becoming the Celestial Navigator. They all dreamed of leading their kin to the Winter Sanctuary, ensuring their safety and prosperity.

One year, as the Starlight Games approached, a young Robin named Aurora had just come of age. Though she was the smallest of her nestlings and the last to fledge, Aurora was known for her beautiful song, which brought joy to even the weariest of birds. However, she felt inadequate compared to the others, believing she lacked the strength, beauty, and wisdom to be the Celestial Navigator.

As the festival night arrived, the entire kingdom gathered under the Great Red Oak, their feathers fluttering with anticipation. The air was pungent as the leaves had begun to fall, piling and fermenting on the forest floor. The valley thrummed with magic as the Starlight Spirits appeared, their glittering forms illuminating the night sky against a full moon. Their eyes beamed like shafts of light as they studied each bird that sang on their branch, played games in the canopy, and shared food in the nests. In turn, the Starlight Spirits carefully assessed each bird's bravery, kindness, and wisdom.

Much to Aurora's surprise, the Starlight Spirits flew around her perch on a branch of her favorite oak. Their luminous wings danced like rainbows.

A gust of cool wind summoned the maple's leaves to bow with reverence as she waited for their decision.

"Aurora," whispered the Starlight Spirits in unison, "we choose you. The Starlight Feather shall be bestowed upon you, for your song carries the harmony of the stars, and your heart is filled with light and compassion."

Overwhelmed with joy, Aurora accepted the bright orange Starlight Feather with trembling wings. The other birds cheered for her, recognizing the qualities she possessed. All at once, the Council of Elders declared her the Celestial Navigator. It was time for the journey to the Winter Sanctuary to begin.

However, as they set forth, a dark and bitter wind blew, making the journey perilous. The Starlight Feather began to lose its radiance, becomming faint and dull. Aurora worried she was not strong enough to lead the birds to safety.

Amidst the lightning cracks and snowy gusts, a meeting was called among the Council of Elders. At the gesture of the Eagle’s wing, the elders dropped in synchrony down from the blistering wind into the mouth of a small cave.

There, the Crow spoke with great wisdom. "Aurora,” he said, his eyes shining like yellow stones, “the true strength of the Celestial Navigator does not lie solely in physical power but in the ability to inspire and unite the Aviara kingdom. Remember, the journey to the Winter Sanctuary is not solely about survival but about finding hope in the darkest of times."

Emboldened by the Crow’s words, Aurora found her voice and sang to the heavens. Her song echoed through the skies, touching the hearts of every bird in Aviara. As the giant flock flew through sleet and snow, Aurora’s song rang in their hearts, reminding them of the warmth they brought to each other. They remembered the friendships they cherished, their joyful dances through the summer skies, and the ever-changing orchestras of birdsong they had still to compose. So, they flew on.

As the company of birds sang, the Starlight Feather glowed brighter than ever before, guided by the unity and hope that Aurora's song had instilled in them.

With the Starlight Feather shining like a beacon in the night sky, the birds of the Aviara kingdom continued their journey with newfound courage. They braved icy gales, crossed treacherous mountains, and soared above tumultuous seas. And at last, they arrived at the Winter Sanctuary, a paradise of palm trees and nuts, sunshine, and eternal spring.

From that day forward, the legend of the Starlight Feather passed down through generations of birds. Mother birds told this story in their nests as their babies grew within their eggs so that when they hatched, they would understand what they must do.

Now, each year, a different Celestial Navigator is chosen during the Starlight Festival and leads the birds of Aviara to the Winter Sanctuary, guided not only by the stars but also by the hope, unity, and compassion they share.

And so, to this day, the birds of Aviara still migrate for winter, knowing exactly where to go, as they carry the legacy of the Starlight Feather and the eternal spirit of Aurora's song.

Dear April — You are a fabulous ‘Original’ Author among the so many snippers with sharp scissors within our little village. *I’ve subscribed with pleasure.
