The Hermit and the Rat

A Fable

By Mother CombsPublished 11 months ago 3 min read

Once upon a time, there was a kind hermit who lived in a cave in the woods with his loyal dog and affectionate cat. The hermit had found the cave many years ago when he was a young man who had lost everything in a terrible accident. He had wandered into the woods, heartbroken and alone, and had stumbled upon the cave. He had decided to stay there, and he had never left. The cave was his home, and his dog and cat were his family. He loved them dearly, and they loved him too. They were always there for him, and he knew that he could always count on them. The hermit was a simple man, but he was happy. He had all he needed in his cave, and he was grateful for his animals. They made his life complete.

One day, the hermit was out hunting when he came across a small, frightened rat. The rat was shivering and looked like it had been lost for days. The hermit felt sorry for the rat and decided to take it home with him and give it a warm place to stay.

The rat was very grateful to the hermit and quickly became friends with the dog and cat. The four of them lived happily together for many years.

The rat was a very clever animal and learned how to do many things around the cave. It would help the hermit with his chores, such as fetching water and gathering firewood. It would also play with the dog and cat, and they would all have a lot of fun together.

One day, the hermit was out hunting when he came across a large deer. He was able to kill the deer and brought it back to his cave. He was very proud of himself and couldn't wait to cook the deer for dinner.

The dog and cat were also very excited about the deer and couldn't wait to eat it. They barked and meowed with anticipation as the hermit carried the deer into the cave. However, when the hermit went to get the deer from the cave the next day, he found that it had been eaten by the rat! The dog and cat were very disappointed.

The hermit was very angry. He had been living in peace and quiet in his cave for many years, and now this rat had come along and ruined everything. He chased the rat out of the cave, yelling and waving his arms. The rat ran away, squealing in fear. The hermit watched it go, his anger slowly subsiding. He knew that he would never see the rat again, and he was glad of it. He had never liked rats, and now he had even more reason to dislike them. He went back into his cave and closed the door behind him, determined to never let another rat in again.

The hermit was very sad that the deer had been eaten, but he was even more sad that his friends had been betrayed by the rat. He decided that he would never trust another rat again.

The dog and cat were also very sad, but they knew that the hermit was right. They promised to never trust another rat again either.

The hermit, the dog, and the cat lived happily ever after, and they never forgot the lesson they learned about rats: not all animals are friendly, and some can be very sneaky and untrustworthy.

The moral of the story is that it is important to be careful who you trust, even if they seem friendly. Not everyone is who they seem to be, and some people will take advantage of you if you give them the chance. This is because there are people in the world who are only interested in themselves and will do whatever it takes to get ahead, even if it means hurting others. It is important to be aware of this and to be careful about who you let into your life. You should always trust your gut instinct and if someone seems too good to be true, they probably are. It is better to be safe than sorry.
