The Golden Goose

short story for kids

By naveen kPublished 8 months ago 3 min read

In a quaint village nestled between rolling hills, there lived a kind-hearted and humble woodcutter named Oliver. Despite his meager circumstances, Oliver was known far and wide for his generosity and willingness to help others in need. He shared his meager meals, offered a helping hand, and greeted everyone with a warm smile.

One day, as Oliver was venturing deep into the forest, he stumbled upon a wounded and shivering goose. Its feathers shimmered like pure gold in the dappled sunlight. Overcome with compassion, Oliver carefully tended to the goose's injuries, wrapping it in his coat to keep it warm.

To Oliver's amazement, the next morning he discovered that the goose had laid a single, magnificent golden egg. He couldn't believe his eyes as he held the gleaming treasure in his hands. He decided to share his newfound wealth with the villagers, offering a portion of the golden egg to those in need. Word of the miraculous goose spread like wildfire, and soon, the village was abuzz with excitement.

As Oliver continued to care for the golden goose, the magical creature continued to lay a single golden egg each day. With each egg, Oliver shared his fortune with those around him, improving the lives of many in the village. The villagers marveled at Oliver's selflessness and the blessings that had come his way.

However, as the village prospered, a greedy and envious neighbor named Felix couldn't help but feel jealous of Oliver's good fortune. He watched with green eyes as Oliver shared his riches, and his heart was consumed by a desire for the golden goose.

One night, while Oliver was asleep, Felix sneaked into Oliver's humble cottage. He snatched the golden goose and fled into the darkness, his heart racing with anticipation of untold riches.

The next morning, as the sun bathed the village in its golden glow, Oliver awoke to discover the empty nest where the golden goose had once lain. His heart sank, and he knew that the village's fortune had been stolen. Distraught, he began to search for the treacherous Felix.

Meanwhile, Felix clutched the golden goose tightly, his heart pounding with excitement. He could hardly wait to enjoy the riches he believed were his for the taking. But as he clung to the goose, he felt an odd sensation – a tingling warmth that quickly turned into searing pain. To his horror, the goose began to grow heavier and heavier, until Felix was forced to release it.

As the golden goose tumbled to the ground, it transformed into a pile of ordinary feathers, leaving Felix empty-handed and humiliated. The magical goose had punished his greed and treachery, revealing its true nature to those who sought to exploit its power.

Back in the village, Oliver's relentless search led him to Felix, who sat defeated and dejected among the forest's shadows. Oliver's heart ached for his neighbor's downfall, despite the betrayal. With compassion, he offered Felix his forgiveness and a chance at redemption.

Felix, humbled and remorseful, returned to the village with Oliver, and together, they explained the lessons they had learned from the golden goose. The villagers, inspired by Oliver's kindness and forgiveness, welcomed Felix back into their community.

From that day on, the village thrived not because of a magical goose, but because of the kindness, generosity, and forgiveness that flowed among its people. Oliver's selflessness had been rewarded, and Felix had learned the consequences of greed. The golden goose's legacy lived on as a reminder that true wealth lies in the goodness of the heart and the willingness to share and care for one another.
