There weren't always dragons in the Valley. But when they came, it was chaos. Heck, chaos might even be too timid of a word to describe the situation that unfolded. When the dragons came, it was everything that you would've imagined. Giant teeth, larger than the greatest claymores, claws sharper than the strongest steel, and scales harder than a hundred tortoise shells stacked together. Eyes narrow as slits but all-seeing, nostrils flared and always searching for prey. Needless to say, when they first made their appearance upon this earth, the people and all living creatures were at their mercy. Humans whom they deemed had a small shred of intelligence, they kept as their playthings, well some of them anyways. Most humans ended up as food to satisfy the great bellies of these beasts. There was nowhere safe and this darkness would continue for over a thousand years. Dragons lived long lives and they reveled in the the beauty of their existence. Their presence they felt was like a godsend, a token of good luck to all to witness a dragon's beauty. But people were not happy, far from it. Their bitterness swelled to unprecedented levels, their nightmares in the flesh are now right before them. They could do nothing about it though.

No more dreams, no more play, no more living. It was hell on earth. Villages burned to the ground, cattle, sheep, hens, ducks, horses slaughtered. Dragons did not discriminate, when their bellies needed filling, they took anything they could find to try to appease their appetite. However, they could not kill everything in sight. That would make them run out of food and so they began to learn human magics. They began to learn about transformation and shapeshifting so that they could take on a smaller form, that of a human to be precise. With their smaller forms came many benefits, many curiosities. They could converse easily with the humans without them ever knowing that they were talking to a dragon, opening themselves and immersing themselves in the world of the humans, taking in their perspectives, and learning from them. They were amazed at the amount of things to be learned from the humans. Of course none of these included the old sciences. The old sciences and old knowledges were things that were exclusive to the dragons and it was something that was passed down from generation to generation. However, it was when transforming to the figure of the human and adapting to their culture that truly fascinated the dragons that some, over time, forgot how to be a dragon.

Some dragons became famous scientists, some became historians. Some floundered their powers a bit and became magicians and alchemists. However, one thing was for sure for these dragons and it was the fact that they had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and the meaning of existence. Since they already lived such long lives, some made it their life's purpose to try and find and create an elixir that would prolong the lifespan of their fully-human counterparts. This proved most difficult because they could not imagine how fragile the lives of the humans were, always susceptible and prone to diseases. And dragons, although much more knowledgeable and wise in all aspects, failed to notice and recognize that it was the presence of them and the dust that fell off of their scales that caused the health-related issues in the humans. Some, however, of the human race, did not let this go unnoticed and in fact, this became one of the first steps against dragonkind.

Many of the dragon species went off to become healers and teachers of the human race, getting together peacefully and celebrating simple achievements such as birthdays or anniversaries with them by whipping out a cake out of thin air or a cold dish that they called ice cream that was much to the delight of the children. Actually, in reality, all the dragons should've conjured would probably have been ice cream because although the cakes looked fancy and rich, they tasted absolutely horrid. It's as if someone put putty in your mouth and exchanged the sugar for salt. There are not enough words to describe the existence of such a blasphemous creation and none would want to describe it for then they would be reminded of the horrors of tasting the cakes. All in all, it seemed like the dragons and humans were getting along splendidly and positive changes were being made to benefit both species. As it would turn out, this peace would only last for twenty years in human time for there was a group of humans who would never forget the misdeeds of the dragons. They were small at first, but their numbers grew. No one knew who was in the group and no one knew who was not, well except for the core key members and the keywords that they used in what seemed like casual conversation. However, everything seemed to be going like normal until Yorna, the village healer of Lharknes clutched at her heart in the village square on Sunsday, while she was buying fruits and vegetables from the market, and fell face first into the mud. Dharn, the village apothecary, who was chatting nearby at the village square, and saw the entire chain of events unfold, after a moment of stunned silence, quickly rushed over to the scene, checked Yorna's pulse, and then with a pale face, declared to a growing cluster of villagers that Yorna was dead.
