Many years ago, at the origin of the world, humanity didn't need eyes, only the Gods could see.

Touch, smell, hearing, and taste were so refined that men and women could experience and enjoy the beauties of the planet in the best possible way.

Humanity had developed a superfine intelligence, capable of discerning right from wrong.

One day, the Goddess of Love fell in love with a young man.

She drew him to her with her singing, her poems, and her inebriating scent.

The boy could not resist the Goddess, he fell in love with her and one day he said: "You are beautiful".

How do you know I'm beautiful? “ Asked the goddess.

"Your soul is beautiful, your voice and your skin are beautiful" answered the naive boy.

The goddess was happy, but it wasn't enough, she wanted him to see her hair, her skin. She wanted to see admiration and adoration on his face.

But the boy had no eyes to see, only hands to touch, a voice to sing, an intellect to understand. The goddess considered this an injustice, and she asked for help from her father, the Only God.

The Only God smiled and looked at her daughter fondly. His great golden eyes were clear and burning:

Dear daughter, you are too young to understand, your love is as tenuous as a candle flame, you will soon meet other boys and forget this one. Humans are fragile and changeable creatures, we have given them everything they need to make them live happily. They don't need eyes."

The Goddess, disappointed and angry, returned to her boyfriend. She hugged and kissed him, breathed in the scent of his skin and when he fell asleep in her arms, she cried.

As her tears streamed down the boy's forehead, she too fell asleep.

Upon her awakening, the Goddess looked at the face of her lover, and her heart was filled with joy.

The boy, slowly and fearfully opened his eyes for the first time.

One eye was deep and dark, black as the sky at night, from its depths reflecting strength and confidence, wisdom and patience.

One eye was clear and light, blue as the sky by day, on its surface reflections of kindness and mirth, love and comfort.

The boy looked at the Goddess and admired her beauty, hugged her again, and thanked her for the great gift that she had given him.

The boy admired the world, the animals, the plants, the sky, and the sea, and his eyes filled with joy and tears.

For the first time, he saw his mother and his brothers. He could make out the color of their hair.

Then he met a girl. Strong as the sun and fragile as the moon. She could not see him, but could hear, understand, love him.

The boy returned to the Goddess, thanked her again for her mercy and kindness, and asked her to give eyes to the girl.

The Goddess was horrified. Her big golden eyes looked into the eyes of the boy: in the black eye she saw betrayal, while in the blue eye she saw selfishness.

The anger of the Goddess unleashed storms, winds, and whirlwinds. She thought of gouging out the eyes of the boy and depriving him of her gift. But the Goddess of Love was not allowed to harm humans. So she returned to his father, the Only God.

You were foolish and impulsive and disobeyed me. I will not punish the boy because of you. You did not appreciate the love he offered you, you were vain and superficial, and he only learned this from you. Now with his eyes, he has found another beauty. Do not worry dear daughter, when the boy dies, everything will be as before".

The Goddess of Love cried for days, should she have waited for the end of the boy's life and watched him love another? And how could the girl love him if she could not see him?

The Goddess fell into despair and cried and cried again, and her tears furrowed the rivers, and then the seas rained from the clouds, and in the deepest sadness, she thought that those who had no eyes could not cry.

So in her immense mercy, she decided to give another gift to humans: to give everyone eyes.

From that moment, human beings would have eyes to see, eyes to fall in love, eyes to deceive, eyes to delude themselves, eyes to be blinded by love and hate, and eyes to cry bitter tears.

Humans gained eyes, but lost their sight. It’s like the monumental difference between hearing and listening. Well done and beautifully written ♥️

Incredible. I was met a man who was so handsome. I tried to avoid him and when he asked why, I said I knew instinctively he'd hurt me. He swore to me, NEVER. He broke my heart on my birthday but breaking our relationship. He'd found another. Your story certainly hits the heart of the matter.

This was a well-imagined tale and very mythic in your delivery. A great entry!

Damn. There is so much here, so let me try to distill my thoughts. I love how the beginning establishes the wisdom of the Only Gos to have made humanity with superfine senses and the ability to know right from wrong, and yet give them no eyes. How deep this is. Because this is well established, the ways that the Goddess of Love and the human boy depart from those truths are so much more impactful and disappointing. The Only God was right about everything; it was superficiality that made the Goddess ruin humanity, make it less able to discern, less able to pursue the good in life. In short, eyes gave humanity distraction in the various forms of harm: vanity, selfishness, confusion, deception, etc. Specifically, eyes gave them too much to see, and made them blind to the distinction of right and wrong. I feel this is a unique interpretation of Genesis 1, though subtle in its commentary and response. Very well written. I really hope this wins!

Nice write, Ema! I particularly liked this line - "...eyes to see, eyes to fall in love, eyes to deceive, eyes to delude themselves, eyes to be blinded by love and hate." Excellent.

Ema, this was such a creative myth to choose! I love the concept and way you depicted it! “Your soul is beautiful” was such a heart melting and breath taking line for me! I liked the two different eyes the boy got and how they represented different things, that was really clever! This was so well written and a beautifully executed concept! I really enjoyed this story! Great work Ema!!

I love the twist you put in!! It is such a human experience for people to love, and love again, and sometimes it hurts the people involved. I love how you portrayed such a human thing in a story of gods in mythical times! This was really good.

So beautiful. In this journey of life, our eyes become the windows to our souls, revealing the depths of our feelings and the intricacies of our experiences. With these eyes, we embark on a journey of self-discovery, navigating through moments of joy and pain, all while embracing the profound beauty of being human.
