The choice.

A fools gambit.

Storms of life do not come upon us by chance or without reason, but are purposed so that a greater testimony, a grander exhortation can be written and told to those in a time of want and need of inspiration and wisdom. The sound of the raindrops poured throughout the garden, as I gazed about the various trees bearing fruit, the very scent of the moisture in the air was quite strong. My stomach churned, and growled as I continued to wait. I was hungry, in a time of need. I looked upon the fruits all throughout the various trees as I waited for the rain to stop pouring. “I’m hungry, but I should wait. There will be a time to eat with my family back home. It would be wiser to be patient. I don’t want to spoil my appetite!” I thought outloud.

The sound of slithering arose into the air from the ground, as the large snake appeared in front of me. I began to tremble a bit, as its cold eyes shrewdly gazed into mine. “You’re not from around here. Tell me, what issssss a young child like you doing in a placccccccce like thisssssssss?” the Snake asked as its tongue continued to poke out. I reinforced an upright posture, while I gathered my response. “I’m merely waiting for the rains to stop, so that I can move forward and go back home,” I responded. The snake seemed to cackle as I gave my reply. “Are you, hungry, little one?” the Snake cordially asked. Something about this situation didn’t quite sit well with me. “To what reason, I ask, does the predator ask mere prey like me, to know as to why I would be hungry?” I responded.

The snake chuckled lightly. “Ever so shrewd, ever so prudent. You’re correct that I am a hunter, though as to what I hunt, has not been disclosed, if I recall correctly,” the Snake chuckled. “Do tell,” I responded. “I, little one, am a hunter for sssssoulssssss, and I have a wager to ssssssssettle. Gaze up upon the pearssssssss you ssssssee. Do you know what thossssse are?” the Snake replied. I gazed up for a moment, and then looked and saw the most golden pears I had ever seen. Ripe and delightful in every way, looking extremely tasty. “They look like regular pears to me,” I replied.

“Thessssssse pearsssss, have the ability to grant one wish only and only once, to the one who eatsssssss one of the pearsssss. However, it musssssst be eaten and requested before the raindropsssss end and the ssssstorm ceasssssesssss from the ssssssky. Tell me, issssss there ssssssomething you want, more than anything? Issssss there a longing in your heart, yet to be fulfilled?” the Snake asked. I thought long and hard about what the snake had said. “I’ve, always wanted to pursue music, more than anything. But, the serpent said that he’s a hunter for souls. Something doesn’t sit well with me about this,” I thought to myself.

I smiled. “There’s nothing I want that the pears can give me. I can wait for what I desire,” I replied. The Serpent looked at me surprised. “But wait! If the ssssstorm endsssss and the cloudssssss depart, there will be no sssssecond chancesssssss! Isssssn’t there ssssssomething you want? Why wait for the sssssstorm to depart? Why wait through the ssssssstorm?” the Snake asked me. I chuckled. “Whether the storm is long or the storm is short, isn’t the question. The fact that the storm ends is more important. Besides, I think the pathway forward will be much clearer when the clouds depart. I can be patient,” I replied. The Snake began to slither away. “Petulant fool,” the Snake said as he slithered away.

The storm departed and the skies became clear. “Sometimes, it isn’t about getting what you want. It’s about being patient, so you can responsibly handle what you want, more efficiently,” I smiled as I started my journey home.
