Twin Souls
Chapter One: A Thorny Truth The enormous ruby dragon peered down at the altar, seeing to his surprise a human child, no older than two or three of their years, sitting by a crude fire. The child was staring into the flames as if in a trance, apparently oblivious to the fact that he was strangely alone on this old afternoon, with neither care nor caretaker in sight. The boy suddenly hiccupped and the dragon gave a nervous start, adjusting his weight slightly on the cliff overlooking the forest as he considered his options.

Saltwater . Second Place in The Aquarium Challenge. Top Story - December 2022.
The lights are blinding. Red, blue, white, flickering, flashing. Alarms blaring. The floors are slick with salt and blood and glisten under the warning beacons. They’re covered in broken glass.

Lyle’s Aquatic Adventure
It was a hot summer week in early August. I had been through extreme highs and lows, every day and night. I felt so hungry and stress made my stomach go into a rage through my belly. I tried to get through exams during summer school. Then, I did many shifts for my part-time job at the recording studio. I felt exhausted! Suddenly, I got a call from Liam, my best friend. I can't believe this is happening. He’s invited me for a trip to the aquarium. I asked him if I could bring Mio, my lover, and some of her sisters to come. I'm sure Liam had already asked his crush, Ayame. She’s one of Mio’s sisters, of course.

Message in a bottle
I saw her drop it. I watched the tears falling from her face adding salt to the already salted water. Her yellow raincoat was too bright, her violet-hued hair too playful, as she knelt by the edge of the water. Strictly speaking, I should have stopped her. Whatever she dropped would need to be retrieved before I left for the night. I hadn't planned on getting back into the tank. The fish were fed, and I was ready to go home, but as I watched from the dark alcove something inside gave me pause.

Delphine
Sitting in the darkened viewing room, Delphine felt as close to the peace she used to feel before the passing of her Mémé a year ago. The fish swam through the iridescent blue that reminded her of her grandmother’s eyes, with a grace she envied. Delphine herself had two left feet and was all thumbs. Being clumsy just made her even more self-conscious than the average fifteen year old girl.

The Seventeenth Summer (Ch 2)
Chapter Two It wouldn’t be until a few days after his set-to with his mother before Danny would speak with Jake again. He had seen him from a distance a few times on previous days as Jake surfed the breaks off the main beach and he had marveled at Jake’s skill as he ducked and dived and danced across the breaking waves. He had marveled, too, at the beauty of the young man, as if he were now noticing the beauty of the male body for the very first time.
