Desert Party
I was adrift in the desert once. The people there had a party; ephemeral but diverting. They regaled me with hums and clicks and a whoosh. I inquired of them “Say, have you horderves here? My pockets are bare. I have dallied, and meandered. I have time to spare.” They gave me drink from the Fishhook cacti and said dine on mesquite. I thought to stay longer, but they bade me adieu. Nightfall came upon me, and I made my way to the inn. Perhaps one day I will return, and party with the people of the desert once again.

The Ropes That Bind Us
Sybil twisted and tightened the rope wrapped around her wrists. The rough, frayed edges made her skin itch and crawl. As she sat in the middle of the wooden floor, the ancient bones of the house creaked. The wind blew like labored breaths, wheezing and scratching, full of sand. Spidery tendrils of smoke began to twist around her, capturing her in a web that she knew she would never escape. As the fire began to lick her skin, a tear escaped her darkened gray eyes, stinging her cracked lips, and with it freely flowed the remainder of her lucidity.

The Underwater Archaeologist
The ‘Ocean’s Whisper’ sat atop the ocean’s surface like a speck of dust on a vast blue canvas. Dr. Lana Hart, her sea-green eyes mirroring the turbulent waves, looked out at the horizon. The sea was a constant reminder of her father, who had been lost to its depths. He had been a deep-sea diver, a man who’d loved the ocean more than he feared it. His final dive, an exploration of a notorious underwater trench, had claimed his life, leaving a teenage Lana to navigate the world without him.

Unworthy Praise
“Haven’t you heard people call me that before?” He questioned me, with his arms resting on his knees. “I knew that was the name people referred to you by but I had never heard regular people, outside of the sanctuary, mention it in such a way. You're like a god to them!” I commented. He laughed in reply, throwing his head back.

Pizza Day
"Everyone, get down!" I saw the girl, the one who'd been hit, in a pool of blood. What a pretty color, I thought, as tears ran down my bloated cheeks, my mouth still full with stale Detroit-style pepperoni pizza. The intruder's footsteps paced over the dirty linoleum and my pulse kept time with his steps, as if my heart wanted to appease him.
