Short Story
Red Song: Part Two
Read part one first, published last week. Written when I was at university - around 2012. At the time, I was doing my dissertation on fairy tales and filling my brain with Angela Carter, Hans Christian Andersen, and many, many more and I decided to write my own mad tale. I'm very fond of this story, although I'm not sure what it means and maybe that doesn't matter (makes it less of a fairy tale though). It reads like a fever dream, which sums up what life was like at the time.

"The Silver Moon Below"
"The Silver Moon Below" Under the silver moonlight, Carden was a peaceful village. A fresh breeze rustled through the trees, and the air was crisp. Even though it was Harvest Festival night, there was a distinct vibe this year. The villagers had been celebrating under the full moon for generations, but today it seemed as though the moon itself was waiting and watching.

The Vegan Ned’s. Content Warning.
In 2025 neds were almost a distant memory, however John and his mates were part of a new breed, the vegan ned. John looked like your stereotypical ned from the early 2000’s; he was wearing a Marseille tracksuit, white socks tucked into his joggies, an Adidas hat pointing upwards and white shoes. The only difference between John and the OG neds is that John and his mates were strict vegans, to the point that even their shoes couldn’t be leather.

Remember...
They queue at the kiosk like it’s a coffee stand. A man sells the memory of his morning commute—gray sky, same billboards. The woman after him trades her daughter’s fifth birthday party. Advert screens flicker: “Free yourself. Sell your heartbreak today.” The technician’s gloves glint. A syringe, a blink, a memory gone. No one lingers.
