Short Story
Mary the Millennial vs The Chance That Slipped Away
She had just arrived for the presentation that could change everything. The cool conference-room air prickled against her skin, and the low murmur of the audience pressed in around her. A knot of nerves tightened in her chest, but she kept her hands steady and reviewed her speech notes for what felt like the hundredth time, the crisp pages shifting beneath her fingers.

The Submission
Last call for submissions for our Fairy Tales Unhinged Contest tonight at 11:59 p.m.! The email blared in Marissa’s throbbing mind. She had been planning for this contest for weeks. Why had she waited until the last minute to write the stupid story? And now this migraine—no matter what she took, she couldn’t get the stabbing pain behind her eyes to go away, and surely the nausea would soon begin.

The Brighter Tomorrow. Content Warning.
In the weeks that preceded the most important speech of my career, the last call for change I would utter, I, Jeremiah Williamson, had worked tirelessly to gain traction in the polls and to appeal to the disenfranchised and mismanaged and maligned.

One Week at the Bar. Runner-Up in Last Call Challenge.
Last call meant a lot of things for a lot of different people. For some it meant one more round to celebrate a friend's success, for others it meant mustering up their courage to ask out the woman they'd been exchanging flirtatious glances with at the end of the bar all night, and for many employees it was that alarm that alerted them of just about one hour left of work before they could head home, get off their feet, and relax.

Last Chance
June 3rd 5:00 AM I’m not normally up at this hour. I’ve actually been awake for nearly 72 hours. I know that soon the sirens will start again. They start every morning at 6:00. A blaring, loud, pulsating, high-pitched squeal designed to grab the attention of everyone in town. It’s been going off like that for months now.

Waiting For The Night.
Celestial waited and waited for this moment to arrive. The sky was a beautiful dark velvet curtain full of stars. Celestial took a deep breath, absorbing the crisp, fresh air surrounding her; as she looked up, her breath almost left her body as the sky filled with beautiful gold streaks from the meteor shower around her. She clapped with delight as she watched the golden sky dance in all its golden glory above her.

The Halloween Before
She’d been planning her costume for over a month. Dad asked me to take Olivia Trick or Treating tonight because Halloween is her favourite time of year and Dad told me I had to make this year extra special. I used to like Halloween, when I was Olivia’s age, when no one had to worry about their appearance. Now I’m sixteen, it’s just lame.
