This Would Make a Great Memoir
Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. Connor remembered that much from the required science classes at the university, as he drifted in and out of daydreams of being a famous journalist for the Times, doodling in the margins of his notes. However, as he stared wide-eyed and terrified at the gigantic bay window depicting what could be none other than the aforementioned vacuum of space, whizzing by at a dizzying clip, he figured he might as well try to see if anyone could hear him.

Chapter 1: Hot Mess. Cold Snap. Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. What they don’t say is “Everyone can hear a scream in a spacesuit.” Unless you’re at the Emu, where they say it a whole bunch. Mostly in the final minutes before a leap, but also pretty regularly throughout orientation and training. Sometimes this refrain came with a nakedly intimidating eyeball-to-eyeball stare-down, other times with a smirk and a knowing look at a co-worker. Either way, whatever impact this threat or mantra or “in joke” was meant to have on Oslo, it had been utterly worn away through repetition, even to his overly-sensitive emotional radar. If it was anything to actually worry about, he reasoned, they would have covered it in the training. And they hadn’t, so…. just one more thing to add to the list of social exclusions he’ll eventually recall with a spasm some random sleepless night in the future. “Fuhgeddaboudit!” said Al Pacino in Donnie Brasco, (1997, Director Mike Newell, for Sony Pictures, Run Time 127 minutes). And so he did.

Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. The sound of a thousand gut-wrenching screeches resonated through the partitioned section of the ship. Floating on a jettisoned island of metal, Cass winced at the sound, and at the shrapnel in his side. He examined his wounds; the clotting foam wasn’t going to hold for long. He had about five minutes before he started to bleed out. Another scream echoed through the hull and rattled through his head.

PROLOGUE Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. Little do they know good souls are howling for mercy all throughout the universe. Their cries magnify the shimmers of magenta and passion pink space gas that swirls into a toxic cosmic cotton candy.
The Wrong Fold
Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. Dreams are most often silent, yet there can be terror in the absence of sound.

Red Moon
“Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space... or so they say,” the hologram echoed. The hue of the digi-board’s synthetic lights electrified the miner’s byway, silhouetting the rush-hour crowd. McParlane turned away from the advertisement and limped down the tunnel street.

Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. I rather feel like I hear screams too often while looking at the vastness of the stars above me. Inhaling the salty air as I stand just close enough to the ocean for the water to roll over my feet, I ignore the subtle hues of different colored lights coming from me. Almost in a trance, I stand perfectly still as I await something I’m not a hundred percent certain of as a memory rises.

Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. What they don’t say, is that the vacuum of space is a void. A void that eats away at almost every sense. Theruvé learned this within just a month of being in the void. Taste is something you no longer need as a slow release NutrIV injection sustains you for centuries. Touch is something no longer experienced. At the beginning you might feel cold, but even that yields to numbness. Smell, much like touch, slowly gives way to nothing. Hearing? Well, what use is it in the silence of the void? The only sense that must be retained and protected at all costs, is sight. Theruvé was a Shomrim, a sentry of the outer rim, a silent sentinel at the edge of the universe, the first defense from whatever lay beyond The End.

“Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. However, recent advancements in the field of physics suggest that given the adequate amount of matter present in the vacuum, one might indeed be able to pick up—”

Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. What they don't tell you, is just how deafeningly, oppressively silent the vacuum of space really is.
Detour to the Stars
Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. They also said no one would go to space, but the day the first man went up was a victory for the human race.
