They Shouldn't Have Come Here
They shouldn’t have come here, but they did. On the third day of June in the year 2032 aliens invaded Earth. I know this sounds like the beginning of a cliché Sci-Fi novel. You’re probably thinking something along the lines of, “Great, another War of the Worlds clone.” This is not that story.

The Grandmother
I notice her the way I notice weather: a change in the pressure, a new chemistry on the wind. The descent vehicle comes down through my upper canopy at 04:11 local, braking on three jets that scorch a hectare of the Mourning Cypresses I have spent nine hundred years convincing to grow that tall. I price the loss before she has finished landing. Then I do what I have done for ten thousand summers when something falls out of the sky into my keeping.

Here We Go Again. Runner-Up in They Shouldn’t Have Come Here Challenge. Top Story - June 2026.

Pink Buds. Top Story - June 2026. Content Warning.
Running through the weed patch, laughing, I listened for the others as they ran all around me. Who knew there was such a gold mine, or rather, field, right here outside the city limits? Jay Jay had stopped somewhere up ahead, and I could hear him with his “Blessed Mother Mary’s.” While Will and Trina were giggling together somewhere behind me, Suzie was just ahead of me, just as giddy as I was, looking over her shoulder like she wanted to ask me a question.

Where I should be
Ida startled awake in her seat, gasping for air, as if an invisible force had pushed it out of her body. “Kathrine, honey, are you alright?” Ida blinked quickly. The woman tilted her head. She repeated the question, enunciating every “t”. She sounded like the people in the movie Ida had seen at school, not too long ago. What was it called again? Right, “The Great Gatsby”.
