The Haunted House: A Tale of Ghostly Intrigue
It was a beautiful autumn day when Emily first laid eyes on the old, abandoned house. The leaves had turned to shades of gold and red, and the crisp air smelled of wood smoke and pumpkin spice. Emily was on her way to the farmer's market, walking along the winding country road when she saw it. It was a rambling old mansion, with tall chimneys and a weathered facade that had seen better days. It looked like it had been deserted for years, with overgrown gardens and broken windows. Emily couldn't resist the temptation to explore, and so she made her way up the path to the front door.

The mirror showed a reflection that wasn't my own. After a year of putting up with my noisy neighbours in a shoe box studio I had recently moved into a brand new apartment just outside the city where I was looking forward to knuckling down and getting some serious writing done in my new tranquil surrounds.

The mirror showed a reflection that wasn’t my own. I just stared into the blank abyss of eyes that seemed hollow. Cheekbones rounded and yet sunken in where a strong profile once existed. A double chin and more gray hair completed a portrait that I did not recognize. I stepped back from the face who watched me and looked at the rest of the mirror, a gift from my father along with his cognac set, a notebook of his favorite quotes and a bottle of liquor still wrapped in Christmas paper even though I rarely drank. He did also leave me this cottage in a small village off the Maine coast.

“The mirror showed a reflection that wasn’t my own, somehow.” He paused. “Go on,” she prompted. “How was it not your own?” She adjusted a bit in her chair, tilted her head from side to side to relieve some strain, but her blue eyes were always on him, attentive.

The mirror showed a reflection that wasn't my own. No, she was leaner sinister more sure of herself than I and as she held up her crimson clad left hand my breath hitched.

The end of the Sun was something that had been predicted for a long time. Scientists had spent years studying the aging star, trying to understand what would happen when it finally ran out of fuel. The consensus was that it would turn into a red giant, swelling to a size that would engulf Mercury, Venus, and Earth before finally collapsing in on itself to become a white dwarf.

The mirror showed a reflection that wasn't my own. Of all the things I could've noticed; the yet-to-be-unpacked box of clothes, scuff marks on the wall when I brought the bed in, or the bookcase I'd put together upside down. Yet it was the smudge on the newly hung mirror that bothered me.
