The Cartography of Deception
The first lie I ever told appeared on my left wrist the night I turned sixteen. It was small, just four words in a font so delicate it looked like a vein had risen to the surface: "I'm fine, thank you." The Wrong Road. Runner-Up in They Shouldn’t Have Come Here Challenge.
July 19, 1994 Wei was standing on the shore of a beautiful lake the name of which he didn’t know. He’d thought it was just a pit stop on their way to his final destination in Tibet, as his driver had stopped his overheating BJ212 military surplus vehicle and opened up the hood, trying to cool it down. Wei shouted at the driver to wait for him, but the driver just waved him off and said something that he’d reached his destination. Or brought Wei as far as he could.
