For Want of a Story
Chapter One There weren't always dragons in the Valley. At least she didn’t think so, though she was still not as familiar with the Driftless area of northwestern Wisconsin as she had been with the deep valleys of California. Yet, yesterday, with her pet iguana, Xia o Long, on her arm as usual, Long Mo (now called simply “Mo”) had looked more closely at the granite ridges surrounding their small town. Yes, there could be dragons there, perhaps in that highest one with the curved hump and jagged edge. Her mother, Daiyu, born in China, had told her that certain dragons sometimes slept for centuries in rolling hills like these—their backs and folded wings outlined in hilly crests—until someone had deep need of their hidden treasure.

Northmagic
There weren’t always dragons in the valley. Imps of varied motive and provenance certainly made their homes here, so too did enough domovoi that they could hardly be called rare. Amongst the secret, scaly things that shuffled about under cover of darkness lived more than one winged snake, surely, and at least one witch’s dog could fly her about in a pinch—but a fluttering mutt is no dragon, no matter how large or fearsome. Yet something had changed in the air one night before Midwinter, a kind of ache that passed through the senses of every being in the valley, waking the sleeping and stopping mugs of ale halfway between tables and lips. And though none could explain it, and few mentioned it out loud, this single shudder in time marked a changing of the world.

Dragons in the Valley
“There weren’t always dragons in the Valley.” Tylon’s whisper seemed to have been to himself. The poor elf often did that, mumbled some unheard truth of the world while the rest of us did our best to just keep soot out of our eyes. No one else seemed to hear the soft trill of history, but Tylon’s soft brown eyes glared at me across the campfire as if I were the only one who needed to have heard. No sooner had he said it, he turned back to Meekal who was addressing the whole of the security detail.

The Return
There weren't always dragons in the Valley. There were stories, of course, passed down through the generations. Books were written, movies made, some sweet children's fantasies, and others terrifying bloody battles. Most folks wanted to believe in dragons and unicorns, although most adults didn't admit that. Ember wasn't your typical adult.

The Trials
There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. There weren’t very many things Morgana Thane was sure of, but the arrival of dragons to Ellingwich and Bloodstone Valley was one thing she was absolutely certain of. Dragons had made an appearance at the same time she was shipped off to an orphanage in the Outer Lands, sixteen years ago. After her parents death from a tragic house fire, she was sent to a non denominational orphanage in the city of Ellingwich. The orphanage took in all types of witch’s offspring without judgment. Now, she still lives in the Outer Lands, just closer to the coast, technically in Wild Sand territory. It was much nicer to live by herself than with hundreds of others. Even if she had to hike Bloodstone Valley to get into town for supplies.
