The Burning Expanse
"There weren't always dragons in the valley," proclaimed Arin prophetically. "There still aren't," grumbled Tollin. Arin and Tera shared a glance that floated down to the landscape below them. The three of them were still on horseback, peering down the mountainside.

The Dragon's Stone
“There weren’t always dragons in the valley. They inhabited the surrounding mountains, enjoying the cold climates, digging caves into the summits. Their control of the skies was unrivaled, until…” brother Sylvan stops and looks at those surrounding the courtyard. As he inhales to press on with his story he spies a little hand waving in the air. He steps across the makeshift stage, raising an eyebrow and says, “it looks like we have a question. What is your name and question, young one?”

Fiona. Runner-Up in The Fantasy Prologue.
There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. Then again there weren’t always people, or dogs, or trees. If you take cooking, building, farming, or really any other means of progress into account, then history looks a lot more spaced out.

Sacrifice
There weren’t always dragons in the valley. They generally tended to keep to themselves in the mountains, not concerned with the comings and going’s of mortal men. But things were changing. The fabric of the world was changing - the warp and weft near breaking. It was time for the ancient magics to return. The old ones had seen this coming, an inevitability. Ancient alliances were crumbling. A darkness, an evil of word and deed was creeping into the world. It had been subtle at first, barely a whisper. But they could hear it, they could see it. Ad so, they journeyed down from the mountains.

The Rising Dragon
Prologue There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. The history books all say that before the dragons came the world was in constant chaos, full of war and strife. Then, magic was discovered to be more fact than fiction by the worst sort of people and an already chaotic world began its slow descent into madness. It was a discovery kept secret at first by those in power who sought to use and abuse this new ‘resource’. A secret can only stay a secret for so long and, soon enough, the existence of magic became public knowledge.

The five stones
The five stones There weren’t always dragons in the valley. We kept ourselves to the mountains. Away from the little Cold Ones who walked on only two of their limbs, and who had long ago possessed, and then lost, the knowledge to control us. Sometimes on blistering sunny days one of them might mistake us for a passing cloud as we swooped high above the lowlands trying to use the air to ease the competition between the sun and our own hissing internal infernos. But to them we existed only as a scarcely recalled memory, or a fleeting thought on the edge of sleep.
