The Dragon Rider
There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. The story of how they came to be there is unbelievable, but I promise you that every detail I am writing is true. It all happened. I am writing this under a fake name for very obvious reasons, but I need to write it. The truth needs to be told. The world needs to know how dragons returned. But most importantly, I am hoping that this tale will help the world understand why I did what I had to do. My life and the lives of everyone who lives in The Valley will never be the same, and it is all my fault.

Scales of Blood
There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. Or so the legends say. As Nyla stood in the middle of the chaotic arena - the stench of smoke stinging her nostrils, her eyes stuck on the blood seeping from her father’s lifeless body - her mind caught on the opening line to their most famous legend.

Hidden Within
There weren’t always dragons in the valley, or at least that’s what the elders say. I have no memories of the valley without them. I can recall memories of their silhouettes blocking out the sun on occasion and memories of chasing their shadows across the field as they flew high overhead. I have always been fascinated by them, more than my mother liked. I got in trouble many times for being far too curious. Most people avoided dragons, even feared them to a point. This was not so with me, I thought they were magnificent creatures, they appeared so noble and graceful to me. People thought I was strange that I held no fear of the dragons, and yet my respect for them was far greater than other peoples. It’s hard to fear something or someone who has saved your life. It’s something I have spoken to no one of, the day that I was given the gift of a second chance. It was a foraging day for us. Mother and I woke early as was normal on foraging days. This way we could complete all the morning chores and pack food to take with us for a midday meal. I loved foraging days. It meant we were outside in the woods all day, and sometimes we would even meet up with other women and children. I had been sent near the river to the section of pecan trees to gather fallen pecans. My mother knows I love to watch the river flowing and listen to the water as it goes on its journey, so she always directs me to somewhere near the water on foraging day.

Valley of Extinction
There weren't always dragons in the Valley. There were not always humans, either. Nor the elves before them, or the mysterious Accipita before them. But like the humans and elves, they had come, and as with the coming of every new people, the fertile soil of the Valley would be soaked with the blood.

Emergence - Prologue
There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. The words of my father rang clear in my head. Tales of old. Legends. Myths. The winged beasts of old, last seen by the survivors of the fall of the Empire of Scales. All were gone now. Those that rose against the tyrannical dragon lord fled north. The land was safe from them.

The Sun Comes Late to the Valley
There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. The sentence hung in the air between the two women. Sahre felt the weight of it, hanging threateningly at her chest, throbbing with her heartbeat. This was blasphemous; though the meaning of blasphemous had changed a lot in the month she had lain within the stones of this convent.
