Come Morning
June 20th, 1994. 10:37pm There weren’t always dragons in the valley. But then again, there weren’t always sirens in the polluted harbor, or fairies dwelling in heart-rotted trees. No one had actually seen one of these save the Full Blown, too strung out on anything and everything to tell the difference between reality and not. Mumbling beneath their breath at a timid passerby about how they’d seen one of the dragons. Sharp fangs, harsh, crystal eyes. Melted into the shadows where it’d been hiding all along. Only a Full Blown would believe in ancient nonsense like that. And though Angel knew that, he told the detectives anyway. Dragons took his foster family’s life. But spared him.

Dream of Ka'ah'Li
Chapter One “There weren’t always dragons in the Valley.” The words broke through the filmy membrane of Ka'ah'Li’s dream, reverberations from another world. She saw the colors of the words shimmering in front of her. Felt them bump up against her, one after another. Tasted them on her tongue, before her eardrums finally registered them as sounds. With a great effort, as though her eyelids were iron gates closing out enemy troops, the wafish girl managed to pull them up halfway.

The Last Dragon
There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. Very soon, Suren thought, there would be no dragons here once more. She was running. Following the path the Great River had carved into this land millenia ago. The riverbed was dried up, the sediment dusty under her quick footfalls. Suren felt like that, like her overflowing current of hope had evaporated one scorching day and never returned.

Dogs, Dragons, and Damsels in Distress
There weren't always dragons in the Valley. They started patrolling these parts After. You know, like the cliche “protecting the peace” dragon duty. Or maybe you don’t know how those fire-breathers roll… in which case I won’t skip the details. They’re actually incredibly sweet beasts. They just have no space for lawlessness. Where I’d bark to say something was off, they may end up burning an entire village to dust. True deliverers of justice.

The Razed Earth Blossoms
There weren't always dragons in the Valley. Then again, there wasn't always a Valley, either. Before the dragons' arrival, this land was little more than a craggy wasteland stretched out at the edge of a range of jagged mountains. What few oases existed in this corner of the world were themselves near-barren. What little life sustained was violent, cruel, and unrelenting in their constant struggle for survival. Even the vultures hunted the living.

Sneaky conniving backstabbing betrayers!
There weren't always dragons in the Valley. There certainly hadn’t been last time, Fenn reminded himself as he cautiously took the first steps down the path. He paused every few steps both to maintain his balance and to listen carefully. The valley was home to many dangers. There were carnivorous plants, quicksand, enormous bugs, and sometimes dragons. Fenn was counting heavily on that word “sometimes”.

The Glimmer Academy
There weren't always dragons in the Valley. But when there were... Esther settled back in her old leather office chair, and it creaked in protest. She extinguished the lamps with a flick of her hand and closed her eyes to focus. Then hesitated a long moment, but she could still feel the faint call tickling just at the edge of her awareness. It seemed like a weak talent, but a talent nonetheless, and they couldn't afford to have another one snatched up by the guardians sect.

We were wrong
There weren’t always dragons in the valley. Or so we thought. Ren watched a deep, seaweed green dragon slip below the perfectly clear surface of the river like a ribbon of green. High above, another water dragon was twisting gracefully through the air weaving clouds together like a skilled seamstress would sew a robe. The crops were in need of rain after the week of heat that had settled in the valley and turned it into an oven.
