The Covenant
“There weren’t always dragons in the valley,” Carrow flapped his robe behind him dramatically, as though he had wings. The flames of the bonfire sparked at the gust of air, sending light further up, illuminating the vast cave they’d made their home. Embers exploded beyond the barrier of rocks and scattered close to the young ones. They had been sitting almost too closely to the fire, enraptured by their storyteller, but they jumped back in fits of giggles as the firebrands descended. Rumor had it, Carrow had played several small parts in the King’s Theater, before the dragons came. Millicent had to admit he was entertaining. He continued. “Man grew complacent. The valley hadn’t seen a dragon in centuries.”

Dragon Bones
“There weren’t always dragons in The Valley.” “Fascinating,” Gonzo grunted. “Actually, that’s not quite right.” Doctor Fitzgerald did not appear to even register Gonzo’s remark. “It’s in the future tense. And of course, The Valley refers to the whole world, based on the context. There are not dragons in the world anymore.”

A Feat of Four Fools
"There weren't always dragons in the valley." rattled the old mans tone bitter and his volume faint. "No, there was a time at which era we would have been safe to roam without ado the plains of land above our trenches and antres we now encave in like cowering mice; but scant is the company that can attest to such epochs, and scanter still those that would bid of them soothly. This is because company of that like would be preponderantly plagued by such poor memory which often accompanies old age, their aged memories ripe with truths contorted by senility and bent at whim to the obscure state of their minds eye. I am lucky to have circumvented such fate."

Journey to the Oracle
There weren’t always dragons in the valley. The valley was the Free Realm of the faeries and elves. They had always lived there and, although they were equal, the faeries liked to think they kept the elves in check. The elves liked to get up to mischief and were often a little more skeptical, especially Joran.

An Incomplete Narrative History of the Kashan Valley Dragons
Chapter One - The Case for Always Doing One’s Research Author's Note There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. At least, that’s what we Kashani told ourselves for generations—to make ourselves feel better, I suppose.

The Tears of Eórann
There weren't always dragons in the Valley. It held a deep lake surrounded by towering mountains, and the town of Gilios perched on the southern edge of the lake like a water strider, an archipelago of wooden flats webbed together with bridges and canvas. The people lived off the plentiful fish from the lake, and for many years the town was at peace.
