Dragon Trade
There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. The surrounding hills had once been so troublesome to move large carts through, dragon merchants often avoided Vredev Valley. It was only in the last few decades that Stone Callers from the North were able to carve a path through the mountainous terrain, opening trade routes to this quiet basin. Nowadays the market square in Vredev bustled with endless activity.

The BGP Patrol
There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. Unfortunately for the residents of Dongle Heath, a particularly stupid, infuriating and odorous fellow by the name of Philip Brushtongue decided it was a good idea to go on holiday for a week without properly locking the cage that held his pet Arithonian Regal Spotted Eastern Dragons, known to the locals as “ARSE” dragons. This proved to be a tragic blunder on Philip’s part, because the resulting carnage led to a verminous infestation of dragons that swept through the valley like wildfire, decimating the residents’ cheese supply and their good moods along with it.

Ascension
There weren't always dragons in the valley. The first to show up was a smallish green beast with glittering golden eyes. When it came flying in it dove for the livestock and scared old man Gareth to death, quite literally. It couldn’t carry off one of the cattle, but the poor thing had to be put down due to the deep furrows the dragon’s claws had rent in its flesh. Circling back the dragon grabbed a large ram and flew west towards the sea as Missus Anderton came running out screaming for her husband. The appearance caused quite the commotion in our little village, and it was the catalyst that turned my world upside down and changed us all permanently.

Uprooted in the Valley, Chapter 1
There weren’t always dragons in the valley. As they preferred the cooler temperatures of higher elevations, they seldom bothered the etchins residing in the villages, tending to stick to the surrounding mountaintops. From time to time, of course, they would pass overhead or, even more rarely, land in search of shiny trinkets and plump meat. This was little more than an inconvenience for the small mining town of Glimmerpass; as they would often have an abundance of superfluous materials such as silver, gold and cobretwill they could easily spare when facing even the greediest of dragons, they needed not worry about making slogs to appease unsatisfied dragons.

Glass Houses, Stone Walls
“There weren’t always dragons in the Valley… The Valley. There’s water.” – Breathe, what do you see? – Someone’s there. Who? I can’t see them. I’m holding my breath, I can’t breathe. The sky is red, bright red, “Everything is red. The birds. The birds are clawing out of the ocean. The Valley…” Someone is saying something next to me again, but where are they? I can’t see them.

Shades of Light
“There weren’t always dragons in the Valley.” When the words sounded against her ear as if someone spoke them, her heart skipped as she ripped her hand from upon the stone which she leaned. Looking around at the emptiness around her forced her to question if what she heard, she actually heard. Or if she had felt the warmth of breath or just the winds of the Saudi Desert against her ear. It was a cold night and though the sun had set some time ago, Ahashka Cree noticed the sand was still warm as she sat cross legged beneath one of the ancient iron crosses her team had been searching for. As she awed at the clear etchings of an unknown language deep in the stone, she decided that before touching it again, she should prepare. Several long, slow breaths later she set her hand on the stone again, focusing before reaching out and allowing whatever, in. As she sunk into the feeling, she sunk down into the image of the spiral where the voice she heard before began again distant at first, but growing nearer.

Dragons of Osmaria
“There weren’t always dragons in the Valley!,” whispered Liri, sounding shocked and dumbfounded as she dove out of sight. Susgu had quickly crouched behind a cluster of boulders as soon as they had crested the ridgeline and caught a glimpse of the great serpents. Even at this distance, they would have been easily spotted by the dragons’ exceptional sight had they been looking this way, like field mice to a hungry hawk. Hoping they had escaped detection, Susgu signaled to Liri. Fearful of the great beasts’ hearing as well, he signaled using the intricate hand movements used by the Llianese trackers, though he had been scouting with Liri for so long, she would have understood a sideways glance of his eyes. They each carefully and in turn, peered out from their cover to observe the Valley beyond.

Chapter One - An Evening Run
There weren't always dragons in the Valley. Staring at them now, it was as though they possessed this land and I was the visitor. I often wonder what happened that day in March, as I traversed the once familiar forest of my childhood. Had I been destined to open the portal or was it simply waiting to be discovered by the first person to stumbled upon the trail? My life was so different then, I mused, only six months ago. Now I was unsure which reality I preferred. As the largest of the four beasts drew its giant head skyward, I tensed, fingers twitching, and followed its gaze.

Inventing a Dragon : The Legend of Apala
Chapter 1 - Dragons and Dreams There weren't always dragons in the Valley. Meera was frustrated with her editor; why did there have to be any at all? It was bad enough that she was writing a fantasy novel, but dragons? What could she possibly write about that George RR Martin or JK Rowling hadn't already?
