In the quaint suburb of Willow Creek, Ethan and Michael had been the epitome of friendship since their early school days. Neighbors, classmates, and eventually roommates, their lives were interwoven with the kind of deep-rooted camaraderie that few are fortunate enough to find. Michael, the more reserved of the two, had always leaned on Ethan for support through the ups and downs of life. Ethan, with his unwavering optimism and infectious laughter, was the light in Michael's occasionally dim world, illuminating the darker corners and bringing warmth to the chilliest nights.

Over the years, Michael had struggled quietly with his mental health, a battle that Ethan observed with growing concern and a heavy heart. It was during a particularly rough patch, one filled with more shadows than light, that Ethan finally broached the subject of seeking professional help. "You don't have to go through this alone," Ethan had said one evening, the glow of the television casting long shadows across their shared living room, a metaphorical darkness they both felt. "Seeing someone, maybe even starting on medication, it could really help," he suggested, his voice a mixture of hope and worry.

Michael, initially hesitant, found courage in Ethan's unwavering support. The thought of navigating the complexities of therapy and medication was daunting, a journey into the unknown, but Ethan's presence provided a beacon of hope, a lighthouse guiding him through stormy seas. Together, they researched psychiatrists, with Ethan offering gentle encouragement every step of the way, his voice a constant source of comfort. When the day came for Michael's first appointment, it was Ethan who drove him there, waiting patiently in the reception area until it was over, a silent sentinel of support.

The psychiatrist prescribed a course of medication, promising a gradual improvement in Michael's mental health. With Ethan's encouragement, Michael began the treatment, hopeful for a change, a light at the end of the tunnel. As the days passed, however, an unexpected transformation unfolded. Ethan, the constant in Michael's life, began to change. His once vibrant presence dimmed with each pill Michael took, his voice becoming distant, his form less tangible, as if fading into the mist.

At first, Michael attributed these changes to the side effects of his medication. Perhaps his perception was altering, or maybe, he thought, it was a temporary adjustment period, a side effect of his journey towards healing. But as he continued with the treatment, Ethan's image started to fade, his laughter echoing softer and softer until it was nothing but a whisper in Michael's mind, a haunting melody of what once was.

Panic set in as Michael realized the horrifying truth: Ethan, his best friend, his confidant, had never been real. All those years of shared memories, of laughter and tears, were the creations of Michael's mind, a coping mechanism to shield him from the loneliness and struggles he faced, a friend forged in the fires of his imagination. The medication, designed to correct the chemical imbalances in his brain, was dissolving the very fabric of Ethan's existence, a bitter pill swallowing the only friend he thought he had.

The realization hit Michael like a wave, leaving him to grapple with a profound sense of loss and betrayal. Betrayal by his own mind for conjuring such a vivid illusion, and loss for the friend he had to let go, a departure neither of them wanted. "I guess imaginary friends aren't supposed to last this long," Ethan said with a sad smile, his form now barely a wisp of smoke, a ghost of a memory fading into the ether.
