Retribution (2023)

Is it good or bad?

The film "Taken" was a commendable action thriller upon its release 15 years ago. However, it appears that Liam Neeson has been producing repetitive movies ever since. Unfortunately, this pattern continues with "Retribution," as the only thing taken in this movie is the 90 minutes of my life that I will never regain. Let us commence.

Greetings, esteemed viewers. I am Sully, and today we shall discuss the latest Liam Neeson film, "Retribution." The plot revolves around a man who, while driving with his two children, receives a call from an unknown assailant claiming that there is a bomb in the car. Unable to exit the vehicle, he must follow a series of twisted instructions while attempting to survive. I was unaware of this movie's release until the day before I watched it, which is never a good sign. I viewed it at one of Regal's mystery movie Mondays, where they show a film a few weeks before its release, but the audience is unaware of the title until they are seated in the theater. Sometimes it is a delightful experience, such as "Gran Turismo," but other times it is "Retribution."

Despite my criticisms, I must commend Liam Neeson for attempting to break new ground in this film. However, it is difficult to ignore the fact that he has portrayed similar roles in his previous movies. This film's premise is reminiscent of other well-known thrillers, such as "Phone Booth," "Saw," and "Speed." While the movie contains explosions, car crashes, and SWAT teams, it lacks originality and creativity. The film's cliches and predictability make it feel like one of the fake movie trailers shown at the beginning of "Tropic Thunder." I am not attempting to disparage Liam Neeson, as I enjoy many of his mid-budget thrillers when they possess originality and creativity. However, it appears that he is the only one attempting to make something happen in this film. Matthew Modine, a 35-year veteran of the industry, appears to be going through the motions. Furthermore, the film's runtime is peculiar. While I frequently complain about movies being too long, "Retribution" could have benefited from an additional 15 minutes. The conclusion is abrupt and lacks backstory and emotion. In addition, the film's R rating is surprisingly soft, with only one instance of profanity and minimal blood.

In conclusion, "Retribution" fails to provide an interesting plot, thrills, or a satisfying ending. While there are a few surprises, the film's lack of originality and predictability make it a forgettable and mindless 90-minute ride. Liam Neeson's efforts are commendable, but they are insufficient to elevate this uninteresting film. "Retribution" receives a Sully score of one and a half stars.
