Pack of wolves

Stephen grabs Mrs. Novack garbage cans and lifted it up and unto the lever to pull it up. She didn’t leave any extra boxes or other items so he rolled her cans back inside her gate. She’s and elderly lady he didn’t mind helping her. He turns to get back in his truck and hears a noise. It came from the back of the house. He moved over to look back there to see if Mrs. Novack was in the back. He didn’t see anyone so he attempted to get back to his truck. There was another sound he couldn’t identify it. It was still early and was not fully light yet. He decided to walk to the back to see if Mrs. Novack might need his help with something. He got out his flashlight from the back of his truck. He had to hit it on the side of his leg to get it to come on. The battery must be dying he thought. He walked to the back and pointed it toward the back. There isn’t anything back here convince it was nothing he turns to leave. He then he hears tree branches cracking. Something was in the woods. He pointed the flashlight towards the woods and spread the light through the trees the woods and saw eyes. He had almost passed over it until he heard a low growl. He looked around for the eyes and spots them he could see them more clearly the animal had moved forward. He pointed the flashlight directly at the animal and could see it now. The animal was enormous. It was as tall as him and had red eyes. He tried to keep calm. “Woah their buddy.” He moves back slowly. He prays he can get back to his truck and leave. As he moves back slowly the animal move slowly towards him. As it moves forward, he could see it more clearly it was a wolf no doubt in his mind. What was he going to do? He has a weapon but it was in his truck. From the corner of his eye, he could see his truck a few feet away. He keeps moving back slowly and then he thought he would make a run for it when he thought he was close enough to get to his truck. The animal walks out and lower its head while barring its teeth. He turns to make a run for it. He didn’t make it far because when he look back the animal was in the air and headed his way. The animal landed on his check and had him on the ground. He held up both his hands. The wolf grabs his shoulder with its teeth and then everything went black.

Chapter two

After Stephen Katz awakes and realizes he still alive, he takes a look around to see where he is. His vision is blurry so he turns his head very slowly. He still has the urge to run he assume it was from his last memory of the wolf chasing him before he passed out. He remembers the large animal before passing out and it was frightening. The animal was unforgettable because of its size. The wolf stood almost his height. He shivered it was freezing and he only had on his pants. He looks over and sees part of his shirt about a foot across from him only partly peaking out the snow. Since his shirt was yellow if was really easy to see it in the snow. He tries to remember how he ended up here.

He’s lying down on his side and turns over quickly to overlook his position. When he turned over, he felt this excruciating pain in his left arm. When he looked down, he could see the bite mark the wolf left as it tore open his arm. I don’t remember everything that happened but I do remember I was bitten by a wolf. As he looked over the bite, he notices that there wasn’t much blood. The bite was healing already. He could see the skin already regenerating. Stephen tries to recollect what happened to him. He’s aware of where he is and he had to get up and get out of there. He didn’t see Mrs. Novack but he smelled the coffee she must be brewing. It was comforting to know she was alright. He rather the wolf attack him then her. He unsteadily gets up from off the snow. He grabs his arm trying to control his breathing. He needed to find his coat before he freezes to death. It was over toward the trees where he suspects the animal ran. He saw its tracks leading back into the woods. He grabs his bomber coat and put it on. When he walks over to get his shirt it was torn in half. He took it with him. He thought it would be a good idea to take it with him to the hospital and be seen by the doctor. How was he going to explain the peculiar animals’ behavior? He would simply explain that a wolf bit him and that was it. He didn’t think anyone would believe him. He wanted to make sure he’s okay and that the animal didn’t have rabies. He might need stitches. He walks over to his truck and gets in. The hospital wasn’t too far up the road. He hadn’t been there but he knew where it was. He wanted to insure he made out a report because he knew he had to explain his time. He hadn’t done any work and it was almost seven in the morning.

After he arrives at the hospital, he sat for a moment to gather his thoughts. He didn’t want to go in there in a panic. Although he hardly could believe what happened his self. He went to the front desk and told the nurse receptionist that he had been bitten by a wolf. She grabs a wheelchair and asked him to sit in it. There weren’t a lot of people but he felt uncomfortable already. He looked over and saw a female figure he recognizes. It was Sasha King looking good she still had that figure. He always like Sasha and they were good friends while they were in high school. He wondered if she was married. Probably was she being too good looking of a woman to be alone. The nurse was pushing him so fast he started to feel a little dizzy.

“Is that you Stephen? Stephen Kates is that you?”

“Hey Sasha, it so good to see you.” He got up to give her hug and he was only too happy too. He still had feelings for her. When they were in high school, he wanted to date her but he wasn’t ready to open up. He had lost his grandparents that year and wasn’t in his right mind for dating. She still hung around him. They walked to school together every day. They would just talk. He hadn’t seen her since they graduated from high school and his feelings was just as strong. After college he chose to come back home to his aunt. At least the only home he knew after he lost his parents and grandparents. He works for the sanitation department in Toombs County. In the state of Alaska their weather is so unpredictable because they barely every get any warm weather. After his parents and grandparents died, he has been questioning his purpose in the world. His brother Robert hadn’t been the same either he suddenly has become quiet and withdrawn after their grandparents died. He wouldn’t talk much and would answer in one-word answers. They were lonely and even though their aunt stood up and accepted him and his brother Robert. They missed their parents desperately. He didn’t blame his aunt he loved her she took them in and did her best to make them happy. He tried to open up for her even if he pretended to be happy. Robert eventually left home and left him a letter. The letter only had one word bye.

Their grandparents had gotten lost in the snow on their way to pick them up to take them back home to California for the holidays. They had spent a few days with their aunt because she was by herself since her husband died. Grandpa didn’t want her to be alone this time of the year. The holidays make people think about the ones they love especially if they are no longer here. They grandparents had got lost in the snow and ran off the road into a tree. Some wolve circled the car and tried to break open the window. The sheriff told his aunt that they had been scared to death. Stephen and his brother ended up living here and after graduation he left to go away to college in New York to get away from it all. He earned his degree in criminal justice but after graduation he didn’t want to find a job in it. Robert eventually contacted him to let him know he was okay. He wanted to be alone and find peace. Aunt Sarah was getting older and he thought living there he could help her out. The yard needed real work and she has no one to cut the grass.

“What happen to you are you alright?” He taken his coat off and was holding his arm. He took it down so she could look at it.

“Looks like you been bitten. Is this a dog bite?”

“No, I was bitten by a wolf.” Stephen thought that was odd. She didn’t seem surprise but maybe what he saw was shock.”

“We been having a lot of patients coming in with bites. Quite a few were by wolfs.”

“Put him in room seven, Gail.”

They clean his wound they were confused about the wound and how long ago he may have been bitten. “Steven Dr. Lowes wants to know when this happen?”

“It happened around dawn this morning.”

“It seems to be healing quickly. From the size of the bite, it should take longer. Have you had a tetanus shot?”

“Yeah, I have about a month ago. I had to get one when I started my new job in the sanitation department.” They kept him overnight for observation. He asks Sasha to call his job to let them know he was in emergency. It was good seeing her.

Chapter three

After clocking out Sasha was glad to be going home. She has been on the clock for sixteen hours straight. She decided to buy some Chinese take out and go home. She wasn’t in the mood to cook or pop a tv dinner in the microwave. She got in her apartment and started eating she would take her shower after. As she ate, and thought about Stephen. She was happy to see him and was not aware he was back in town and over a month. They both worked early hours that might be why she hadn’t bump into him. He looked good with his dark hair and bronze physique. He was as handsome as he was when he was younger. She knew he wasn’t married because he checked single on his medical papers. She had to admit she was happy to hear that. She was in love with Stephen even in high school. She often fantasizes about them being married. Maybe she would be able to see him again. He must be staying with his aunt. Her mom work for the only real estate company around. She would have told her if she had run into Stephen. Her mom knew how she felt about him. She pushed her food away. Look at her self she thought how could she even think about a relationship of any kind. She couldn’t tell Stephen about her situation. Her mom told her about how she came to be her daughter when she was fifteen. She had to she had lost her temper with another girl during high school and viciously attack her. Nobody believed her because who would believe she turned into a wolf. She heard the girl eventually committed suicide after the town label her crazy. She had turned into a wolf. Her mother told her that she was left on her doorstep as a baby and explanation about her being born half wolf, half human. Sarah wasn’t like other wolves she didn’t want to hurt anyone. She had no choice but to live her life alone. If someone found out the consequences could be deadly for her. All she can do is be friends her situation made no promises for her to have a future. She jumped up and knock her table over. Stephen was bitten by a wolf!

Chapter four

Stephen felt better after a few days. He went into the bathroom to check on his wound. He couldn’t believe it the wound was no longer there. It was as if he never was bitten. Could he have been dreaming? He decided to go ahead and get some chores around the house. It was about eleven at night and he was tired. He laid down to sleep. “Arrrrrgh!” Stephen opens his eyes and felt like his whole body was going to explode. He turns over and slides to the floor. His skin felt like it was stretching and his body was changing. He tries to stand up and realizes his hands and feet were long, hairy and had fierce nails. It took what felt like and hour but was only another few minutes. He was on all four legs and he looks in the mirror. He knew the wolf in the mirror was him. He remembers the stories about wolfs running out and killing people. Stephen didn’t have that urge. He felt different more powerful. He could smell food from the city. He could hear other animals in the woods. He went to his window stood up on the windowsill and pushes the window open. He jumps out and decided to go for a run. He remains in the dark he didn’t want anyone to see him. He ran through the woods and he just look around. He could hear the bugs in the trees. The ants working putting away their food. He felt something he had not felt in a long-time freedom. He no longer had to conform to society. No more schedules, or appointments but what about his aunt. He didn’t want to leave her. He had to because with this life change, he had to be alone to figure things out. He ran around checking the world out and when dawn set in, he went home and got back in the bed.

Sasha knew Stephen would change. What would he do? She knew she had to tell him about herself and she had to tell him what was going to happen to him. Would he be angry? She didn’t know. Sasha was now twenty-six years old. She dated but every man she dated had some type of character flaw. Some were disgusting and had no other reason to date her but sexual pleasure. She wanted something more real. She was tall for a woman and men found her very attractive. With her long hair and beautiful smile at least that what they tell her. She has always been called a beauty. She wants a family and a mate that she could grow old with. She was hoping it would be Stephen. What if he is not like her and wanted to kill other humans. She was afraid of that thought. She focuses on the possible thoughts and that he may not be that way. She had to be to work in thirty minutes. She would contact his aunt and see if he was there later. Maybe should could talk to him to see what he decided. She knew he had turned by now. She also wanted to ask him about the wolf that bit him. There were wolfs in Toombs County that were killers one being their old school mate Bores Crump.

Stephen grabs his coffee and heads off to work. He had his regular route today so he would ask Mrs. Novack how she was doing. He gets in and heads out and hope today would be a good one. He couldn’t stop thinking about Sasha. Would she be open to hearing what happen to him? More importantly is she married? He hadn’t realized how strong his feelings for her were until he saw her at the hospital the other day. She was still beautiful she really hadn’t change. It has been years and she still look as youthful as the days they shared in high school. After work he was going to drive up to his cabin in the woods. He will tell his aunt he wanted to get away for the weekend.

Chapter five

Sasha called Stephen aunt and she told her he went to his cabin in the woods for the weekend. She gave her his cell number. She decided to call him over the weekend. It has been a while since she dated and she wonders if it is still okay for a woman to call on the man. She got off early it was her weekend off. She decided to go home and see a movie. She had not realized until now how lonely she was. She decided to go for a run when it gets dark.

Stephen had picked up some supplies before going up to his cabin. It was already stock with can goods if he needed anything. It was quiet up here. The snow was hard and crunchy when he stepped on it as he gets out of his truck. He was cold and he wasn’t wearing a coat. Funny how being a wolf made things easier for him. He liked being a wolf but he was scared about some parts of it. He was feared by humans. He couldn’t see a life living as a wolf and being a part of society. He has to decide what he was going to do with his life. For right now he would just try to get to know who he is and find the changes made. He went to check on his barn. His horses were alright but there was a smell. He recognizes the smell though he only been a wolf a small while. It was the scent of another male wolf. He thought the scent was familiar but he wasn’t sure. He walks over to the back of the barn. The intruder slept back here he saw a pellet made from the hay in a corner. He wondered why his horses didn’t try to break free. He hopes who it was has gone now and would not return. He turns to finish up feeding his horses but worried. He went back in and notices he hadn’t eaten today. His eating habits had change. He only ate meat whether raw or cooked. He went over to his mirror and undressed. He was in good shape. He wondered and then he focuses. He did it! He has the ability turn into a wolf when he wanted to just by focusing. He decided to go for a run. It felt wonderful he could see everything he was so fast he could jump over trees. Then he saw something from the corner of his eye. Something or someone else was here and running. It was another wolf. He stopped and hid behind some trees. It could be the wolf that bit him. He waited and listened. He could here the other wolf walking through the trees coming his way. The sound was closer he could see the wolf. It was a female! Even as a wolf he knew who it was Sasha.

Sasha wanted to get out so she didn’t think any other wolf would be out here. She knew must of the other wolfs especially the meat eaters stay deeper in the Forrest. She tried to pick up the other wolf scent. She was ready to leave she didn’t want any trouble. She could see the other wolf behind a tree. It walked out and towards here. It was black and tall but this wolf had kind eyes Stephen! It was Stephen. Stephen could not believe what he was seeing. Could it be Sasha maybe he was dreaming. He walked up to her and she came closer and put her neck into his. He couldn’t believe it. Stephen sense other wolfs coming so he nudges Sasha to follow him. They run together and reach his cabin. There they turn human and show each other their nakedness. Then they did something they wanted and should have done years ago. They made love under the moonlight. After the lovemaking they laid together holding each other and relax in the quiet.

“Tell me Sasha how is it you are a wolf?” Sasha told him the story her mother told her. That she was born a wolf. Then Stephen told her what happened to him. They knew they were going to be together. They weren’t going to be alone anymore. It was still early so they went for another run. It was cold and their bodies gave them heavier coats. It was wonderful Sasha felt free. They were running and laughing. When they got back Stephen hears his horses whining. He went to see why they were acting up. He turns back into human and grab his clothes. Sasha followed him. Inside his horses were jumping around and fidgeting. Something was in here. He adjusted his eyes and use his lights to seek out what was it spooking his animals. It was another wolf. When the intruder realizes he is seen he gets up and walks toward Stephen. “Robert!”

They grabbed one another and Stephen realizes Robert was crying. He wouldn’t let him go. He understood what he was going through. The feeling of being lost and lonely. “It has been a long time Robert.”

“It seems a life time but I think about three years since I had made the change.”

“I recognize your scent but I wasn’t sure.”

“Sasha is that you. Finally got my brother huh?” Robert hugs her.

“We are not alone Stephen.” He looks at Sasha. “Did you tell him?” Sasha shook her head. They explain to Stephen about the other wolfs the meat eaters that were dangerous. Stephen decided then and there that he would make a home for him and Sasha. He would build a village for other like them. So the children they have will have others to play with. They all agreed that they would build a village together where other wolves that believe in what they believe in can work together. They would provide a home for them all. Stephen gave up thoughts of leaving the world. He had his brother back and he had the woman of his dreams. Now he had to build their future.

The End.
