On The Run

Behind The Last Window

The outside world was unknown to her, but she could see a glimpse of it through the window in his room. So much time had been spent running, moving, and never looking back. Half-written emails were sent to friends and close families just so they wouldn't ask questions and start looking for them or worse, have the cops involved.

A long, slow sigh left her lips and she pulled her knees to her chin and let her head rest on them, staring out the window at the blue sky above. It was quiet and cool, and the sun was just starting to rise on the horizon, another sigh whispers through her lips. A strong hand touches her back and slowly she turns her head toward him.

Still half-asleep his eyes slowly open to look at her, a slight smile forms on his lips, and she returns the expression with a twinge at the corner of her lips before turning back to the window. "How'd you sleep?" He asks.

"Just enough." She answers.

He lifts himself leaning in towards her while balancing himself on his arm, "same answer as yesterday. You should try to get as much sleep as possible."

"I know." She whispers. Then turns her head to him, "but it's not like we're on vacation."

His dark eyes held hers for several minutes before saying, "I know but if we're not rested this will be a lot harder. We'll start to get sloppy, make mistakes, and..."

She moves her hand over to his lips to stop him from saying any more. He stops and lightly kisses her fingers and a small smile forms on her lips, "I know all of that, you tell me every day but it is always easier said than done."

Slowly, she pulls her hand away and then turns back towards the window. He sits up fully and moves closer to her putting his arms around her and resting his head on her shoulder letting the silence of the room take over. It was a beautiful sunrise with each new day giving promise of a better one than the day prior but always ending with them thankful to have another night together in a new location. Double checking that they weren't followed, recognized or made a mistake that would lead them to their demise.

"Soon, sweetie, I promise. Soon we'll be done with the running and safe to stay in the same place for more than just a few hours."

She lets out another sigh, "so you keep saying but each day doesn't bring us any closer to soon."

"But it brings a closer to the place that will keep us safe. A place for us to hide and never be found. Soon is just a few days away."

"We still have to cross the border. The strictest and hardest part of the border to cross. We've been flagged and who knows if our passports will get us through, not to mention our fake papers showing residency on the other side. I just..."

"Don't say anymore. We both know what lies ahead and we'll just take each day and each problem as it comes."

They both let out deep sighs and continue staring out the window, watching the sun slowly start to rise and in the far distance the mountains begin to appear. "Do you see that?" He asks.

She nods slightly. "Those are the mountains of freedom, we are so close, please believe me when I say, we're going to make it."

She turns towards him and leans her forehead against his, "even if we do make it. What about money? Our funds are frozen, remember?"

A small smile begins to form on his lips and he leans back, reaching up to take her head into his hands. Her eyes lift to meet his and she pulls back slightly at the large grin that is on his face. The largest she has seen since the whole nightmare started. "What? What are you smiling about?"

He leans in and whispers into her ear and as he does she too begins to smile, he really did think of everything.
