Serena had her radio turned up loud. Loud enough that the car next to hers knew that she was listening to Taylor Swift. It was a long day, she had so many clients come into her office that day and was glad to get out. Being a psychologist is fun, but draining. Helping people everyday is completely emotionally exhausting and she was glad to be done work. Her friends had been texting her non-stop trying to plan Katie’s birthday. Serena could only answer in between clients and when she put it away in her purse she could hear the buzz buzz coming from the inside pocket of her purse begging for her attention. Serena tried to ignore it as best she could, as soon as she got in her car she checked the messages that came in.

Hey I think we should go to the hot springs this weekend texted Laura.

I think Katie should decide texted Ashley.

Serena sat there and she decided the text the group back. We should go to that restaurant that Katie loves and maybe a weekend getaway to wherever she wants.

Serena, then started her car and pulled out of the parking lot. Her phone buzzed in response. Okay, I will text as soon as I am a red light she thought. She rolled up to 6th ave one of the busiest streets. The light was red as she hoped which meant she would be there awhile. The message came from Katie:

Oooo yeah! We can all go to Lina’s on 19th good thinking!

Then, the light turned green and another text came in, it’s fine I can text back, thought Serena as she looked down at her phone for a second as she hit the gas pedal.

Then, out of nowhere a car hit her Chevy spark. The impact sent Serena’s body to hit the window and everything happened so fast. Her head was bleeding and she could not feel her legs. Why did everything look weird? Serena was upside down, her while front window was smashed into pieces. Her vision got blurry and it was suddenly dark.

Sirens went off and a fire truck arrived at the scene. A man sat on the curb crying into his lap as a police officer was getting his statement.

“It belongs to a Serena Delgado woman 31 years old, date of birth January 7, 1993. Victim was found unconscious and she bled from her neck due to the glass of the window slicing her neck. Time of death 6:32 as specified by EMS worker Donell Burke due to bleeding out and impact of the crash. Victim appeared to be texting while driving causing accident. Phone was on and in the middle of a text when her body was found,” read the trainee officer to his superior. The superior officer nodded even though she was barely listening. 60 seconds was all it took, she was texting while driving and it took away her life.

The difficult part came next. Telling the family that their daughter had been killed. Anna and her trainee Matt walked up to the house that Serena had grown up in. They knocked on the door and an older woman answered the door.

“Officers? What can I help you with?” She asked sweetly. This woman had no idea that her life would soon crumble.

“Honey, who is at the door?” Asked her husband who appeared in the doorway.

“What’s going on?” He asked.

“It’s your daughter Serena,” Anna began.

“Oh god, is she alright?” Asked the mother covering her mouth.

“There’s been an accident, Serena is dead,” said Matt.

“No! No! She can’t be! She’s not!” The mother immediately broke down into tears she cried into her husbands shoulder who was shaking and tears welled up in his eyes. Their little Serena was gone, she was just at their house last week and like that she was gone.

“We are so sorry for your loss, we need you to come to the station and pick up her belongings,” Matt said.

“What happened to my little girl?” Asked the father.

This was the hardest part.

“She was texting while driving and-”

“I warned her, I warned her so many times!” He cried out.

It took 60 seconds to change a family’s life forever.
