As nine year old Jason is putting the ingredients into the chocolate cake he is baking for his father, tears runs down his face as he repeats this will be the last time my dad ever beats me. He is shaking like a leaf in the autumn wind as he looks at his reflection in the mirror in the bathroom. His blond hair is covered with blood again, his blue eyes are swollen shut. Poor Jason looks like he just went fifteen rounds with Mike Tyson. Jason's mother, Phyllis is in the bedroom having given her very last to protect her son from the monster she had married.

As Jason is baking this cake, he remembers all of the ingredients his mother laid out for him to put into the cake, including the cyanide. Jason even had the letter his mother hand wrote explaining she baked the cake so her son wouldn't be blamed, after all he was just nine and deserved better than the life he was already dealt. As Jason put the cake in the oven and cooks it it smells good. Jason must also remember the cake is for his daddy only. Thirty-five minutes later the cake is done, and Jason takes it from the oven to cool. In another ten minutes Jason puts the frosting on the cake, cleans his mess and goes upstairs. Jason places the note on the table from his mother claiming responsibility for the death Jason's father, therefore; any and all suspicion is gone away from a nine year old boy.

Due to abuse Jason's attendance wasn't that great at school especially in the condition he was currently in. Upon his arrival he was summonsed to the principals office and was asked what happened and he said his father did this to him. The principal called social services who went to Jason's house to talk to his parents. They found both parents dead, and informed Jason. Jason sat there with tears running down his cheeks knowing he was truly an orphan now. They got some clothes for Jason to wear but Jason was too distraught to enter the house where both parents were just found dead. Jason had no other relatives so he was taken to social services.

The caseworker worked the phone until around nine pm when she called one of her new foster workers. She told her about Jason and what had happened and she said oh that poor dear of course I will take him. She said she would be there in about fifteen minutes. Jason's case workers name was Melinda and his foster mother's name was Brenda. Both of whom were very young and would have their challenges with young Jason. After the foster worker left, Jason was given a tour of the house and taken to his room. His foster mother left him to get settled in and told him it was bed time. She told him good night, then went to bed herself.

Around midnight, Brenda went to the restroom and in doing so checked in on Jason who wasn't in bed. She checked the entire house, and outside but no Jason. Her heart sunk, she called Melinda and the police and they went on a hunt for Jason. They searched everywhere, then Melinda went to his old house where she found him sleeping in his old bed. Melinda went in with an officer and said "well my love, this isn't going work out very well." Jason said "I missed my teddy bears and I was afraid to come in and get them because of the dead bodies". He said "I am sure you think I am a big baby, but I want them." Brenda went over to Jason and got down to eye level and told him that if he wanted to bring his teddy bears to her house she had no problems. He smiled real big and she grabbed his hand and all four bears, and out the door they went. Melinda said, "honey if you need anything from here please don't hesitate to ask.'

After Jason was put back into bed a second time, he was sleeping within ten minutes. Jason was kept home from school because of how he looked from being beaten and despite both parents being deceased they wanted Jason to start therapy. When he returned to school the other kids started to bully him and now the teachers had to keep an eye on him, which started to cause other issues. Eventually Jason had to be held in the principals office during recess. Jason didn't like this arrangement and snuck out of the school and off of school grounds one day. The results weren't very good for Jason. He ran in front of a car, was hit and flipped into the air. One of the staff members saw this and they took off towards Jason.

As they were loading Jason into the ambulance, the school called his foster parent and his case worker. When they arrived at the hospital they were advised Jason broke his femur and his collar bone. When they arrived home from the hospital Brenda told Jason that they were having his favorite meal of meatloaf, mashed potatoes, gravy and corn, then for dessert, his favorite which she understood was chocolate cake. Jason smiled then said it was. Jason was told by Brenda that he would be moving to a permanent home in about a month. The people were really a nice couple and they wanted a child they could bring into their home and love.

Jason met with his potential new parents and on the first day he walked on the meeting. The foster father came in and said 'you don't like this or us at all do you son?'" Jason said "no I hate the idea, of leaving Brenda." The gentleman's name was William, and he said, "Jason, my wife and I are Brenda's parents." Brenda's getting married so we are adopting you and she will be your sister. Tears filled Jason's eyes as he realized what was being told to him that he was going to be in a forever home where he would be loved with no more abuse. William said Jason, please join us for some chocolate cake, I hear it is your favorite. Jason laughed and replied, yes sir, dad.

It wasn't long after Jason was adopted and Brenda was married that things took a turn for the the worse. Brenda's husband was named, Nathan and was a decent hard working man. Nine months after their marriage Jason and Brenda's parents were trying to get back home when they were in a serious accident. Both of Brenda's parents died instantly, but ten year old Jason was still critical. Brenda and Nathan stayed at the hospital as much as possible, then Nathan said to Brenda, lets adopt your brother. Brenda looked at her husband and said I knew there was a reason I married you. They went into see Jason and told him both the bad and good news. Nathan said I will bring you a piece of chocolate cake to seal the deal and Jason laughed.

Two years later Jason told Nathan and Brenda what happened to his father that he was the one who put the cyanide in the mix and baked it. He said his mother begged him never to tell because he could get into trouble, but his conscience won't let it go anymore. Nathan and Brenda said they were proud of him for telling the truth to them, but they wouldn't be turning an abused child over to the juvenile court system. Then Nathan said shall we all have a piece of chocolate cake? Jason said yes without cyanide please.
