Each night, at bedtime, little girls all throughout the world would make their wishes at dusk upon the first evening’s star.

“I wish I may, I wish I might -

have this wish, I wish tonight.”

The most common wish was for the love of a beautiful pony, on which a girl could spend hours braiding the silky hair and then ride, racing the wind. Pegasus always appreciated these moments, watching in love and awe from his position in the constellations.

When the children closed their eyes and fell into restful sleep, Pegasus would fly down from the Heavens and kiss them on the cheek, feathery light, so as not to wake the little ones, but granting them peaceful dreams filled with magic.

One night, upon his flight to leave a good-night kiss on the cheek of a girl, she opened her eyes, catching the magical beast in her adoring stare.

It was then his choice to be trapped forever on Earth by a twinkle, he nuzzled the little girl softly, and lost his wings.

In the morning, when the little girl awakened, she ran outside to see if her wish had come true, or if it was all just a dream.

With wide, twinkling eyes she saw the white horse standing there, awaiting the little girl’s hugs and adoring kisses. Soon, she hopped up onto his back and they took off at a free-spirited gallop, as though flying through the wildflowers and leaping over logs. Together, they never needed wings to soar.

They stopped for a moment in the meadow so the girl could pick daisies to braid into her pony’s mane. The pony nuzzled her gently in return.

And that’s how horses came to be; Pegasi on Earth to fill the magic and imaginations of little girls everywhere - to lovingly grant starlight wishes.

Daydreaming, or should I call it, in my case (at the age of 76), "fantasizing about things that can never be, always relaxes me and helps me sleep after a hectic, worrisome day. Thank you for reminding me that it's ok to dream.
