It was a foggy night in London, the kind that muffled sounds and made it hard to see anything more than a few feet away. Detective John Smith was walking back to his apartment after a long day at the office when he heard a scream. It was coming from a dark alleyway that led off the main street. John hesitated for a moment, then headed towards the sound.

As he got closer, he could see a woman lying on the ground, moaning in pain. Her clothes were torn, and her purse had been stolen. John immediately called for an ambulance, then began asking the woman what had happened. She was barely coherent, but managed to gasp out that she had been attacked by a man in a dark coat.

John took note of the woman's description of the attacker and promised to find the man responsible. He spent the next few days interviewing witnesses and reviewing security footage from the area.
