It was sooo boooring. No one had been in the living room all day. Everyone was busy when suddenly he heard the sounds of the girl and the boy who were part of this family. They were teenagers and he didn’t really like some of the things they enjoyed watching but he had not choice. His favorite times were family nights when they gathered together and ate popcorn and laughed a lot. The girl burst into the room and viciously grabbed him from the end table by the couch. “Ouch!” he thought. He didn’t like how tightly she gripped him. Then just as viciously she started jabbing at his buttons. He thought he might choke.

Then the boy tried to wrestle him out of her grasp. That was the worst of all. He felt like they might pull him apart. At least he expected his battery cover to pop off and the batteries to fall out ending his hold on life for a moment. They were fighting now and suddenly he felt himself go flying up and then coming down for a looong fall. He thumped to the carpet and then saw that he was in danger of being stepped upon. They took no notice of him lying there and kept fighting each other completely oblivious to the fact that not one of them still held the remote.

Then with a swift kick, he slid over the carpet and was suddenly enveloped in darkness. For a moment he wondered what had happened and then realized one of them had kicked him under the couch. Then he heard someone else enter the room and the lower tones of the Father. “Stop it right now!” “If you don’t neither of you will watch TV tonight!” he shouted. The boy and the girl stopped their fighting and then the Father asked them to hand over the remote. At that moment they realized that he was missing. The mellow tones of the Mother sounded “I’m making dinner so I suggest that by the time dinner is ready you both find that remote!” Both the Father and the Mother left the room.

Lying in the dark beneath the couch he wished for two things. One that he had been given a voice and could let them know where he was and two that he had arms and hands to knock on the bottom of the couch. Both the boy and the girl began searching the area around the couch, beneath the coffee table, and near the TV. He was elated to hear the boy say, “I got an idea. I bet while we were fighting we kicked that remote under the couch.” Then one pulled and one pushed and the couch slid back. He saw light and realized he had been found. The Father returned to the room and with a flourish put a remote holder on the end table. “This is where I expect to find the remote when it is not in use and I hope you’ll both never fight over it again.” Then the Father took him and placed him into the holder. His very own place he had never felt so loved. “Dinner is ready!” called the Mother.
