A Dick Winchester Adventure (and a real bar!)
Book 1, Chapter 5
“I don’t know, Dick. I’ve heard stories about this.”
“The challenge is half the fun.”
“Maybe...”
“Katie, look at me.”
She met my eyes.
“It may be the half a hat of rum punch I’ve had tonight,” I said, sliding the glass hat into my jacket, “but I have a good feeling about this.”
That feeling lasted until the bouncer blocked the front door.
“Interesting shape your jacket’s making, buddy.”
I glanced down. “Oh, that? That’s my gun.”
He patted my chest, feeling the .38 Special in its holster.
“Ah, my mistake.”
Then he looked at the massive bulge behind my pants zipper. “So what the hell are you packing in there?”
“Uh... just lucky?”
His eyes narrowed.
“Now!” I yelled.
Katie flew out of the shadows and brained the man with a barstool.
Halfway down the block, I paused to remove the coveted hat before it chafed everything important away.
That’s when I happened to see the bartender walk out into the street with a Kalashnikov.
As we ran, bullets whizzing off the pavement around our feet, I turned to Katie. “How many bars is that now?”
“At least three bans in the past two days.”
What a weekend.
