At the First National Bank of NC a bomb has been wired into bank’s vault located in the rear of the building. Carter Whitsett, a senior member of the Warren County bomb squad has arrived on site to diffuse the bomb. The bomb was planted in the building by a group of heist-men who initially just planted the weapon as a diversion after they robbed the bank for $800,000, but after they were intercepted by responding police units the bomb was triggered in the melee. With Carter prepping to diffuse the bomb chaos ensues as there is only one minute left to disarm the weapon.

The timer on the bomb only has one minute left. Carter is sweating bullets as the rest of the building is evacuating. Just outside of the building everyone within a three block radius has been evacuated because police and the bomb squad have no idea how destructive the bomb will be if it cannot be disarmed. Carter has been put to the test many times because of his profession. There are many bombs that he has disarmed and a select few bombs that he was unable to disarm in time had to make a run for it just barely escaping with his life.

The final sixty seconds of this bomb is counting down and every second is it’s own death. Okay…okay. I can do this, Carter thinks to himself. As the thought passes Carter glances at the timer and sees that it is now down to fifty seconds. His heart is now racing faster than before as the rest of the bomb squad observes with determination. All of their lives depended on this one moment just like Carter’s. You can do this Carter, one of the squad members cheered from behind. Yes…yes I can do this, Carter responded nervously.

I’m not gonna die, Carter thought. I’m not gonna die and everyone here with me isn’t gonna die. I’m gonna diffuse this bomb and save the block. Carter once again glanced back at the timer and saw that the clock now only had 40 seconds left before it blew. He snapped out of his fearful thoughts and collected himself as fast as he could. He opened the cover of the bomb and was faced with three wires: one was red, the other was blue and the last was yellow. Carter then looked back at the timer again and saw that the clock was now on thirty seconds.

Ok, remember your lessons Carter, he thought to himself. Red means dead, blue means you’re threw, yellow means you’re mellow. As the timer closed in on the final twenty seconds, Carter slowly but nervously raised the cutter in his hands towards the trio of wires. He was now soaked in sweat as the clock counted down. 19…18…17…16…15. As the timer reached fifteen seconds Carter slowly wrapped his cutter around the yellow wire. With his heart racing faster than before and his eyes closed he lightly cut the yellow wire in half and the timer stopped at ten seconds

After a silent pause Carter and the bomb squad let out a huge sigh of relief. Carter’s celebratory relief ended abruptly when the timer suddenly started ticking again. In those last few seconds Carter suddenly remembered a bonus lesson he was given in training: sometimes when you think yellow is mellow it’s a trick and timer restarts with a hello.

Uh oh, Carter uttered shakily. His heart then grew a newfound fear as the last three seconds of the bomb timer counted itself down while Carter and the rest of the bomb squad watched. three…two…one…
