Cube Me Baby One More Time
Making the Most of Micro Seconds
Even though the Australian knew he could not keep it forever, Feliks Zemdegs had pulled it off, and he was happy.
He had taken it once before, eight years ago, in just 7.03 seconds, but even he knew it did not belong to him, at least not exclusively. Eventually, someone would come for it again. Still, he relished the sub-5 seconds he used to snatch it — 4.22 seconds, to be exact.
As it turns out Felix was right. 203 days later, Yusheng Du, a Chinese citizen, would lift it from right underneath him.
Solving the 3x3x3 cube in just 3.47 seconds, Du would grab the world record for himself on November 24, 2018.
Hungarian sculptor and architecture professor Erno Rubik invented Rubik's Cube in 1974 to teach his architecture students about three-dimensional objects. Since, the puzzle has become one of the most popular and iconic in the world, with millions of people attempting to solve it every year.
According to Guinness World Records, on June 11, 2023, 1,660 days later, an American named Max Park, renowned in the Netflix documentary "The Speed Cubers," achieved his steal at an event in Long Beach, California.
The heist took all but 3.13 seconds.
