Cinnamon Rolls
An Ellie Short Story
Leah was going into diabetic shock in the middle of her neighborhood park. It was five past nine in the morning, and she was out enjoying her well deserved snow day. The snowball fight she was having with her dog, Ellie, turned for the worst when Leah suddenly collapsed into the snow.
Ellie bolted to Leah’s side, and immediately began sniffing her breath. Ellie was two years old, and had been training to be a diabetic alert service dog for the last eighteen months. She wasn’t a professional yet, and her skill set was incomplete, but she did know how to identify the scent of sugar, as well as the distinct chemical scent of Leah’s high and low blood sugar levels.
Leah was newly diagnosed, and was still learning to listen to her body. Unaware that her blood sugar level was rapidly dropping, she bolted out into the winter wonderland with her best friend.
Sensing a seizure, and confident that the vest had no glucose tablets in it, Ellie did the only thing she could. Follow her nose. Turning right onto Shawmut Ave, her nostrils flared from the baking cinnamon.
She barked until the bakery’s door opened. Barging inside, Ellie found the source of the cinnamon. She continued to bark, while showcasing her purple and green Diabetic Alert Service Vest. The baker understood the dog’s mission, and filled a cloth bag with a handful of small cinnamon rolls.
The first morsel stopped the tremors. The second one saved her life.

That essential, sparkling you that you only reveal to a select few. Had I been paying more attention to the stories you are so fond of telling, in which you are invariably author, narrator and protagonist, I would not have been so foolish as to set you up on a blind date. After all, no friend has ever done anything of the kind for another. That’s preposterous. What is a friend, really?

This was so sweet and also quite gripping.
This was a compelling ride and I didn't let go until Leah was secure. It's hard to pull a reader straight through to the last word but you mastered it. Excellent!
