At least I’m not sipping vodka from a tea cup,” Gary blurted at Anise, full of contempt, breaking the seal on what had remained unspoken far too long.

She paused only briefly before looking directly at me, surrendering in defeat and disgust. Anice knew immediately that I’d betrayed her, sharing her secret. But deeper than that, as her eyes filled with tears, she knew she’d betrayed herself. For although I may have breached her trust by revealing the truth to Gary, she now realized that she had never been very good at concealing it in the first place.
