Ten years on

Things now are beginning to improve, the worst we hope has past. Every year that passes gives us reason to believe that we will survive. We’ve managed to gain some measure of prosperity, mostly concerning our food supply. It’s been 10 years now since the breakdown and we haven’t seen any of them for the last 2 years. How any of them made it that long is beyond me.

I suppose it’s time, it’s time I put down what transpired. It’s been long enough that I can look at things with some measure of separation and not too long to where I may have forgotten certain aspects. Still my emotions may skew my perspective and for whoever that may someday read this I apologize.

First and foremost this accounting is just my story. It is not the overall account of what happened. I will try to convey with as much truthfulness as possible the events of the past. Although sifting through what the government and the media of the time told us is almost impossible. Let alone all the conspiracy theories. That said let me begin.

Who knows exactly the beginning, I’m sure that someone more knowledgeable could nail down a specific event or should I say action. What did someone somewhere do that caused this catastrophe. What scientists following who’s orders did research that should never have been started. My God the ego. They all deserve the end that they received.

I know where my beginning was. As do most of us common folk. The first hint of the virus casually commented on in the evening broadcast. But those few words gave me pause, my hand had unconsciously gone to the heart shaped locket on a chain around my neck. I had a feeling, a premonition if you believe in such things. I do. The locket had been given to me by my husband. When we had first started dating. I’ve worn it ever since.

Within weeks that was all you heard about on the news. 24/7 Spreading like a wildfire it covered the globe. Soon the shutdowns took the economy into a tailspin. The government doing whatever they could to slow the spread. First it was the old and infirm that succumbed,, feeding the fear. Everywhere you looked people where wearing masks. Or some stupid buff, like that ever stopped anything. And the numbers continued to mount, over the next year into the millions.

Then they rolled out the vaccines, one, two, three and more. All from new cutting edge research. As we rolled into summer that second year things started to return to normal. People had lined up for the shot. Most. They took pictures and waved their papers showing the world that they weren’t afraid anymore. Yet they still wore their masks. Some, the rest deferred. Not really trusting the big drug companies, why get a shot for something more or less treatable? These folk just stayed quiet and went back to living.

Summer rolled into fall and everyone was breathing a sigh of relief. It seemed that we had passed through the worst of it. But there were rumors, people were talking, mostly mouth to mouth. People were dying after the shot. Blood clots, brain inflammation and more. Still most seemed fine.

Then came winter and with it flu season. Now the government was pushing for more shots, flu shots and boosters for the virus. Again they lined up, the same ones. Again some died. Again it was ignored. But some started to prepare. To get ready, hoping for the best but preparing for the worst. Staying silent and just watching.

Some say it was the boosters that did it. Others that it was over after the first round of shots. Either way they started to have problems, some just dying while others suffered longer. A type of autoimmune disorder that they couldn’t stop. At first they were still lying, telling everyone to stay calm. That lasted maybe a day or two.

The first run on the stores came that weekend. And when everyone saw what was happening on social media it was a tsunami. Everywhere panic had replaced reason. None were safe. The military was then deployed. But they were dying too. Having been mandatorily vaccinated. Upwards of 70 percent of the population had taken the death shot as it was now being called. And 80 percent of them were now starting to have issues.

Chaos ruled. People hunkered down the best that they could. The cities were death traps. As they were the ones mostly vaccinated. Weeks went by. Those that tried to run from the death found no sanctuary anywhere. The rest, us, waited. Knowing that this was just the beginning. That what was to come would shake mankind down to the bone.

What was left of the Government and the Military now took drastic action. No quarter was given. The cities burned. You were shot if you were even suspected of having gotten the shots. Superstition of transmission of what ever had been in the shots was reason enough for most.

Still this was just the beginning, those still alive knew that living would become hard. That survival would depend on many factors including will. That first year saw many more succumb. Not to sickness, but to starvation and murder. Roving bands of mercenaries were common, praying on the weak and unprepared. Then they fed on each other when things became dire.

Today I don’t know how many are left. We see few people traveling. Very rarely a plane will be sighted. So there may still be a government, who knows. We have not relaxed our vigilance. We can not afford one misstep. Our small band has not ventured out beyond our remote valley in years. Soon we may have to see what is left.
