Chapter 6

Linda’s Awakening

Linda opens her eyes and finds herself in an unfamiliar room. She sits up groggily and thinks to herself, “What happened? Why am I here?” As if on cue, the memories of her mental breakdown in the lab rush back to her at blazing speed, but none remain of the aftermath of the breakdown.

She looks around her taking in what little detail the room had. It was very barebones with only a bed, a rug, and a dresser. But on that dresser was a picture of Jeremiah, Tech Boy, and Tech Girl when they were younger. She walks over to the picture and picks it up. She thinks aloud, “I must be in either Tech Boy or Tech Girl’s room. How did I get here?”

“Would you like me to answer that?”

She looks towards the voice, shock visible on her face, and sees a grown woman with brown hair next to her. Now facing her, she backs up out of shock, but trips and falls on the bed that she was just on.

The woman says, “Don’t be scared. I’m sorry for my sudden appearance. I am actually a hologram produced by the base, which is why you didn’t hear anyone enter.”

Linda is obviously skeptical, so she climbs off the bed and approaches cautiously. She places her hand on the hologram’s shoulder and it’s completely solid.

“Jeremiah built this base with advanced hologram technology specialized in the production of solid holograms. This technology is mostly used for the Memory Arena above us which produces solid holograms of Pokémon that Pokémon Rangers can use to test their capture skills,” explains the hologram.

Linda has no clue what to think of this other than “absolutely disturbing”. She takes her hand off the hologram grimacing at it and says, “I think I’m going to go now.”

“Do you require any assistance?” asks the holograph.

“No, I can figure it out,” stutters Linda utterly creeped out.

The woman bows and disappears in a flash of blue light. She opens the door and exits the room.

“What kind of hellscape am I in? It seems Jeremiah controls everything here. I’m not sure whether this or the Nightmare Realm is worse anymore.”

“Excuse me, miss?”

She looks towards the voice and sees Detective Matsusushi. She breathes a sigh of relief.

“You look like you’re having a bit of trouble. Is there anything I can do to help?”

“Umm…no. I’m just…overwhelmed. I feel like I’ve gone from one hell to another,” answers Linda.

“One hell to another?” questions the detective.

“Oh sorry. I used to live in this terrible place called the Nightmare Realm. While I was in there, I always hoped that someone would come to rescue me, but nobody came. When I finally manage to escape that awful place, I find myself here, in a place where nobody trusts me and Jeremiah, the person who abandoned me, controls everything. It’s a bit of a shock,” explains Linda.

Matsusushi listens with open ears and after a moment of silence says, “I can’t imagine what the Nightmare Realm is like. Lately, it’s been crazy around here as well. We’re being cautious because we’re in the middle of a full-blown war. I don’t know what I can do to help you, but if you ever need a friend to talk to, who isn’t one of Jeremiah’s lapdogs, I’m here for ya.”

He extends his hand towards Linda.

She says “Thanks” as she takes his hand and shakes it.

“Is there any way I can contact you in case something happens?” asks Linda.

Detective Matsusushi takes out his notepad and opens it to a blank page. He jots something down and tears the page out of his notepad and hands it to Linda. She looks at it and it contains his contact information including his watch’s frequency number.

“Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. Just let me know if you ever need anything.”

Linda nods and Matsusushi tips his hat at her. Afterwards, he walks away. Linda walks down the hall in the opposite direction away from the room.

Chapter 7

Lunch Date

Jeremiah and Tech Girl are currently eating little triangular sandwiches in Superhero HQ 9’s cafeteria. The kitchen is currently manned by a hologram. As Jeremiah swallowed another bite, he gets down to business, “So, what time are we going to execute this plan anyway?”

Tech Girl takes a bite out of one of the sandwiches and drinks a few sips of her glass of water before answering, “Well, considering the transformation requires moonlight, it has to be late at night, so I would say around 8 or 9. However, it is entirely possible that different types of plasma could trigger the transformation especially if reflected off the right surface. I would love to get a sample of her DNA for testing purposes.”

Jeremiah smiles and says, “You really do love science, don’t you?”

He takes a sip of his water as Tech Girl replies enthusiastically, “Heck yes. I know that it’s technically part of my DNA since Gaxi HAs are all technopaths and our survival instincts revolve around advanced science and engineering, but I just love it so.” She inhales and exhales calming herself down a bit. She takes a big drink of water and quickly grabs a couple of more sandwiches, one in each hand, taking a bite out of each sandwich. After she swallows, she says embarrassed while blushing, “Sorry about that”.

Jeremiah reaches for another sandwich while casually putting a hand in his pocket and says full of understanding, “That’s alright. I already know you love-Hmm?”

Jeremiah took another bite out of the sandwich as he fumbled around his pocket looking for something. He pulled out a singular light ball and placed it on the table.

“A light ball?” questions Tech Girl a bit surprised before finishing off one of her sandwiches.

Jeremiah replies, “Yeah, looks like it’s my last one. I’ll have to go over to the Light Realm later and restock. Luckily, I have the rest of the day off, so I have plenty of time to do that.” He grabs the penultimate sandwich and takes a bite out of it.

Tech Girl takes the last sandwich and says, “You know I could come with you and help you.”

She finished off the rest of her sandwiches along with Jeremiah before he replies, “No, I have the feeling you’re going to need time to set up stuff. Where should we do this anyway?”

“I have a place in mind just outside Superhero HQ 9. I’ll send you the coordinates later. Originally, I was considering Superhero Stadium, but the different time zones would be really inconvenient,” stated Tech Girl.

Jeremiah puts his hand behind his head and says, “Yeah, I can see why. We would probably have to wait an additional few hours if we try to set up there and it could mess with our overall schedules. A nearby location would actually be better suited for the task just so long as it’s above ground.”

Tech Girl nods in agreement and then Jeremiah recalls, “Oh yeah, I just remembered. Why did you think it was a good idea to shove Gary into an untested teleporter?”

Tech Girl answers nervously, “Oh, umm…well…you see, I figured since we needed a test subject and penguins are simpler than humanoid creatures in biology, he would be a perfect test subject. So, I…shoved him in.”

Jeremiah shot her a disapproving gaze and scolded calmly, “Next time ask him for permission instead of just shoving him in them. I did recruit him after all, and it might reflect badly upon me if he’s injured.”

“Yes, sir,” answers Tech Girl nervously.

Jeremiah smiles and says, “Now, then…” He stands up from his chair causing it to scoot back a bit and concludes while walking next to Tech Girl, “it seems like lunch is finished so let’s get to work.” He holds out his hand and extends it to Tech Girl. She grabs it, stands up, and says smiling, “Yes, let’s go.” They left with many tasks ahead of them.

Chapter 8

Investigation

“I’m sorry sir. There is no records of a location called the Nightmare Realm in the database. Maybe it’s another dimension like the Shadow Realm, or it could be that someone is lying to you. Either way, we don’t have any data on it.”

Detective Matsusushi puts his hand on his hat, sighs, and says, “Thank you for your cooperation regardless.”

He walks out of the lab and sighs. He thinks back to Linda’s statement, “I feel like I’ve gone from one hell to another…I used to live in this terrible place called the Nightmare Realm.” No aura was around her at that time, so at the very least, he believed that she was telling the truth. Next up, he decides to go over to the Archaeology department to ask them for information.

“Nightmare Realm? Hmm…” He starts to think on it and after well over a minute he says, “Sorry, I haven’t heard of it. As far as I’m aware there are no ruins or legends that talk about such a place. You sure you aren’t talking about Hell from the Bible?”

“I am sure. My source simply referred to it as the Nightmare Realm,” answers Detective Matsusushi.

“Well, while that specific wording never comes up, there are many myths that suggest the possibility of dreams being a world in of themselves. Unfortunately, they’re very few and far between that we can’t verify the accuracy of them.”

“Any information you can give me right this minute?”

“I’m sorry, but I don’t have the proper files on me. I’ll get to work tomorrow on locating them.”

“Be sure you do.”

Detective Matsusushi left and while walking in the hall, he got a sudden headache. All of a sudden, the hallway in front of him went dark. He could make out the shape of a face, but it was distorted. A feminine, seductive voice echoed, “So you want to know more of the Nightmare Realm? I can help you for a price.”

A dark hand reached out from the abyss now in front of him. The hand had nails long enough to be used as claws. Detective Matsusushi was scared, but he kept his head and asks, “Who are you?”

“I am a Dream World Moderator, Morrigan. I know all there is about the Nightmare Realm along with the Dream World. Now, why don’t you come with me?”

The detective saw no aura of lies but he knew that his sight was not infallible. Sure, it could detect lies, but it could not detect twisted truths. This event was proof that the Nightmare Realm existed, but also proof that there was something there that no one should ever see.

“I see. Too bad for you.”

The dark hand retracts. The voice observes, “It seems you are not interested in my offer. Too bad.”

Light returns to the world and afterwards, Detective Matsusushi falls on the ground, clutching his chest, breathing heavily, sweat dripping from his brow. He gets up still clutching his beating heart. He thinks, “I’m lucky. Whoever that was. No, Morrigan, lost interest. I better be careful. She might come back.”

The detective walks away.

Chapter 9

The Light Realm’s Guantlet

Jeremiah just arrived at the Ship Bay, where he walks over to the Rustbucket and hops into the ship. Before he has a chance to close the cockpit he hears, “Hello.”

He looks behind him and sees Pikachu in the passenger seat. He thinks about this for a moment and then remembers that the entire base has a universal translator built in.

“Ah, hello Pikachu. It looks like we’ll be working together from now on,” greets Jeremiah.

“Yes,” agrees Pikachu smiling.

“Currently, I got an errand to run and I can’t take you with me at the moment, so I’m going to have to ask you to please vacate the ship,” states Jeremiah.

“Oh,” pouts Pikachu.

“Don’t worry. We’re still on for missions. By the way, you want me to pick you up something at the pokemart since I’m heading that direction?” offers Jeremiah.

“Sitrus Berries? I really want some Sitrus Berries.”

“Sure, I’ll pick you up some Sitrus Berries on the way back,” says Jeremiah.

Pikachu cheers, “Yay!” before hopping off the ship and running into the hallway. Jeremiah closes the Rustbucket’s cockpit and inputs a series of commands into the ship’s console to disable the tracking on it. Afterwards, the roof opens up and the ship lifts off out of the Ship Bay, creating a low whining noise in its wake. The Rustbucket takes off from its current location in the Almia region at breakneck speeds towards its destination: Mt. Coronet in the Sinnoh region, ETA: 3 minutes.

Upon arrival, Jeremiah doesn’t land. Instead, he keeps flying straight above the center of Mt. Coronet. A white portal opens up in front of him and he flies straight into it. Jeremiah finds himself in a bright yellow realm full of disconnected platforms. He finally lands on one just large enough for his ship. On this same platform was a path leading to a pedestal containing a light ball on it. The cockpit opens up and Jeremiah hops out of the ship.

Before doing anything else once outside, he does some stretches to loosen himself up for the upcoming obstacles. Around 30 seconds to a minute pass while Jeremiah stretches. After finishing them, Jeremiah takes a running position. He runs across the path passing the first axe, jumping over a second one, and zipping past the third. He grabs the light ball off of the pedastal before jumping off the platform to the next one. Upon landing, a bunch of flaming arrows fire at him out of nowhere. He dodges them with quick circular motions before breaking into a run during a split-second interval in between shots.

He grabs another light ball at the end of the platform and jumps off it levitating to another. This one only containing Hercules, a table, and two chairs. Jeremiah sits down and puts his arm on the table. Hercules follows suit and grabs his hand. They begin to arm wrestle, their strength evenly matched. Hercules gains a slight lead but Jeremiah counters giving him the edge. Hercules pushes him back to their starting position. Jeremiah put all his strength into his next attack and dealt the finishing blow knocking Hercules’s hand to the table. The victor gets up and celebrates as Hercules pulls a light ball out of his toga pocket and hands it to the winner.

Jeremiah accepts the light ball and pockets that one as well. He jumps to a circular platform underneath housing a mighty kraken. The kraken swings a tentacle at him. Jeremiah jumps over it and his hand ignites right as he lands. The creature attempts to slam a tentacle downward at him. Jeremiah hops to the side avoiding it and then jumps forward and punches it in the face with his fiery fist knocking it back a bit. However, that left an opening in Jeremiah’s defenses allowing the kraken to smack him flying. His orientation suddenly shifted due to a change in gravity and he lands face-first on a sideways platform.

Jeremiah stands up right before the ground starts to shake. He looks behind him and sees a huge boulder coming down towards him. He starts running straight down at sonic speed. He grabs the light ball at the bottom of the platform before jumping off it to a right-side up platform narrowly avoiding the boulder which fell off its platform.

Jeremiah looks ahead of him and notices that the current platform he’s on runs straight, twists at the center, and inverts for the second half. After being smacked by a kraken and outrunning a boulder Indiana Jones style, he’s naturally a little winded. So, he takes a brief moment to pause and catch his breath. Jeremiah reaches into his pocket and pulls out a cold bottle of flavored water. How it’s still cold? Nobody knows. He takes a big drink out of it and places the cap back on it before stuffing it back in his pocket.

His right arm right under his shoulder suddenly glows blue and everything around him turns blue as time slows. He just casually starts walking along the path slowly to conserve energy. As he walks towards the center, arrows slowly fire at him from the sides. Not worried a bit about the arrows, Jeremiah continues his stroll as gravity gradually inverts itself as he is walking across the center twist. Upon reaching the second half, gravity is completely inverted and his footsteps cause cracks to appear on the platform, but they are not much of a problem. The platform starts collapsing behind him slowly as he makes his way to the end. Upon reaching his goal, he grabs the light ball off the pedestal, jumps off, and levitates to an angled upside down platform as the other one collapses.

Suddenly, time returns to normal speed as color returns to the Light Realm, what little there was. Ninjas hop out from above the platform in a flash of blue light or is it below. Hard to tell with that platform’s gravity and orientation. One of them pulls out three clock hands and throws them at Jeremiah. He jumps up to avoid them, but one hits him from the side sending him skidding across as he aged down into a seven-year-old. Two time ninjas were in front of him. They proceeded to stomp on him, but thinking quickly, Jeremiah turns himself into blue goo and they step into the goo. He constrains them by the legs as the slime wraps around them. Jeremiah’s slimy face appears next to them and he childishly sticks out what qualifies as his tongue at him. The clock hand slips out of him and the childish slime rendition turned into a facsimile of his present day form. Suddenly, time slowed down and one of the ninjas rushes at him with giant twin clock hands. Jeremiah expands his slimy prison and sends his slimy self head first at the rushing ninja. Suddenly, he is hit from the side by blue nunchunks on his “head” which forces him back into his seven-year-old self in his solid form with the clock hand back in his side as if rewound back to it. He rolls into the rushing ninja landing on top of him. Suddenly, he is hit in the side before he had time to react by the nunchunks and he goes down by two years sending him rolling across the arena once more. Time’s flow returns back to normal as he gets back up with modest injuries. He tries to activate his power Earthquake, but nothing happens. He realizes he can’t feel the Orb’s energy anymore.

The ninjas all begin to recover and are getting ready to attack. The one Jeremiah rolled on pulls out a clock and prepares to throw it. Jeremiah decides to cut his losses and jumps off the platform back-first. While falling, he takes the clock hand out of his side and he ages back up to 12. He suddenly levitates in an arc back up or down. As he is ascending the ninja throws the clock at him. He spins in midair to avoid it. Jeremiah holds his hands in the air like he just don’t care and a giant sphere appears above him. One ninja throws more clock hands at Jeremiah, but a boot of earth forms around his legs and he kicks them aside. The sphere unleashes a deadly blast that covers the whole platform, Jeremiah’s dreaded ST Mega Blast.

All the ninjas are severely wounded, the platform is barely holding together. A blue light rushes to Jeremiah returning him to the proper age. Jeremiah lands on what remains of the platform and upon landing, the ninjas get back up and bow. One of them walks up to Jeremiah and hands him a light ball before disappearing in a flash of blue light. His wounds begin to heal as he speed-levitates away from the platform and lands on another circular platform, this time with normal orientation. He is panting a bit, but the Light Realm provides no time to rest as a hammer comes down at him. With only a split second to react, he backward somersaults to dodge the hammer causing it to crack the ground with its impact.

Its wielder was a big, buff bearded man reminiscent of a Viking. He swung a second hammer in a sideways arc at Jeremiah who swerves a bit to the side stepping back and attacking the Viking with a whip of fire with much greater reach than the Viking’s dual hammers all in the same motion. However, the attack failed to even faze the Viking who charges at Jeremiah.

Jeremiah puts his guard up as he swings a hammer at Jeremiah who avoids it by taking one step back. He brings the second one down at Jeremiah’s head, but he blocks it with his hand. Jeremiah’s leg starts glowing and he kicks the guy in the balls. The man winces in pain clutching his crotch as that kick hit him like a tank. Jeremiah spins around creating a massive tornado of fire and collides with the Viking knocking him down with minimal burns. The tornado dissipates leaving Jeremiah standing in its place. The Viking pulls out a light ball and hands it to Jeremiah who honorably accepts it.

Jeremiah runs off the platform and jumps off levitating to the next one. He runs across it and jumps across several smaller ones reaching another light ball which he grabs before jumping onto a platform with a fountain on it. In the fountain steam was coming out from it and in it was a beautiful woman. Jeremiah grasped that this was a test of temptation and “Noped” his way out of there. He jumps off and is greeted by a tentacle to the head. His greeter is the same kraken that knocked him to the boulder platform. Jeremiah gets back up as the kraken roars. He starts running in circles at lightning-fast speed around the kraken. It can’t keep track of his movements. Jeremiah jumps up and grabs a tentacle and continues running in circles tying it up with its own tentacles. He grabs another one and runs the other way as the kraken tries to swat him but fails as Jeremiah quickly avoids all attacks by jumping or simply being too fast for it, tying it up from both directions. The kraken retreats under the water and a tentacle resurfaces with a light ball that Jeremiah takes and pockets.

He levitates to a platform with a snazzy host and an empty podium. He lands behind it and the host announces, “Let’s welcome our newest contestant!”

A nonexistent spotlight shines on Jeremiah and he says, “Hello, I’m Jeremiah Ellison and it’s a pleasure to be a part of this trial.”

“Here are the rules. Get three questions right, you win a prize. Get a question wrong, and the platform will collapse. First question, what’s 2+2?”

“4.”

A ding could be heard and the host announces, “Correct. Next question, what’s the capital of New Mexico?"

“Umm...”

A beep was heard and the platform’s corner collapses.

“I’m sorry! ‘Umm’ is not the correct answer. Next question. What is 7152 times 7?

“Can I get a piece of paper, a pencil, and five minutes to solve the problem?” asks Jeremiah.

“Sure. But it will cost you your lifeline!”

Jeremiah’s pockets suddenly feels heavy as the host hands him the requested objects. He reaches into his pockets, but he is unable to access its contents. He gets to work on the problem since he can’t afford to waste more time. It takes him about 3½ minutes to finish the problem and he answers, “50,064!”

Another ding. “Correct.”

“Next question. Who is the spy in the Agency?”

“I don’t know that!” yells Jeremiah before the other edge of the platform collapses. The podium starts cracking.

“I’m sorry, but we have to count that as wrong. Final question! What is the difference between the Dream World and the Nightmare Realm?”

“Specifically, where the types of dreams are housed. Good dreams are housed in the Dream World segmented off into various hubs with neatly ordered portals into everyone’s dreams whereas the Nightmare Realm houses the nightmares we have and the outside is a hellish landscape where active portals are few and far-between.”

Three dings. “Correct. You have just won a fabulous prize: one light ball! (He places it in his hand and shakes it) I hope we’ll see you next time.”

The platform suddenly collapses, but Jeremiah’s pockets are back to normal. He levitates back to the Rustbucket and hops in. It lifts up and flies back to its entry point. The white portal reopens placing above Mt. Coronet. He makes a quick stop at the Pokemart in Eterna City and grabs a couple of Sitrus Berries for Pikachu before returning to Superhero HQ 9.

The ground opens and he lands in the underground ship bay. Jeremiah goes to re-enable the tracking on the Rustbucket when he notices, “Huh? The tracking’s already enabled?”

Chapter 10

The Werewolf Predicament 2

The sun is about to set as footsteps echo in the forest outside the Memory Arena.

A voice asks, “Where are we going, Jeremiah?”

Jeremiah, looking at his watch, answers Linda, “You’ll know in a minute.”

They exit the canopy and find themselves in an abandoned playground. In the center of the playground was Tech Girl working on some strange machine in the middle of a makeshift lab. Linda is creeped out by the eerily similar backdrop to the original nightmare and Jeremiah says, “You have terrible taste in location, Tech Girl.”

Tech Girl heard him, looked in their direction, and waves them over there. Linda awkwardly waves back and says, “Umm…I think we should head over there.”

Jeremiah responds, “Yeah, we should. She is expecting us after all.”

They walk over to Tech Girl who greets them, “Glad to see you’re both here.” Then, she looks at Jeremiah arms crossed and asks, “And what did you mean when you said I had terrible taste in location?”

“Did you even read the file?” asks Jeremiah.

She pulls it up on a computer and skims it and sees the part detailing the original location the nightmare took place in.

“Oh, I see your point. Still, this place was nearby and rather convenient for our purposes. And umm…” she staggered off embarrassed and Linda chimes in, “Can someone explain to me what I’m doing here?”

Tech Girl looks at Jeremiah once more sternly, “Did you not explain anything to her on the way here?”

“No,” mutters Jeremiah.

Linda looks down and says, “I just assumed the worst.”

“Jeremiah, go over there now,” Tech Girl orders pointing to a merry-go-round a few feet away from them.

“Yes, ma’am,” responds Jeremiah quickly shaking a bit from fear.

He runs over there at regular speed and just sits on the merry-go-round clearly a little too big for it. Tech Girl faces Linda once Jeremiah takes a seat and warns, “I guarantee you won’t like what I have to say. Despite that, it is imperative that you know what we’re doing here. Are you ready?”

Linda takes a deep breath and answers, “No, but I don’t think I ever will be.”

Tech Girl smiles and proceeds to explain everything to Linda about their plan, their reasoning why, their other ideas, and how they know what she is. Linda becomes increasingly anxious during the whole explanation holding her arm to keep it from shaking. Tech Girl finishes, “Any questions?”

Linda stutters, “Umm…what kind of problems can my werewolf form cause?”

Tech Girl says, “Mostly loss of spacesuit and endangerment to anyone aboard the ship.”

Linda says with a blank expression, “I see.”

Tech Girl walks closer to Linda and plucks a hair from her and asks, “Any further questions?”

“No, not really,” answers Linda.

She turns around and heads back to her makeshift lab and says, “The sun’s almost set. You better get into position.”

Tech Girl calls Jeremiah back over as she places the hair in a microscope. Jeremiah walks over and Tech Girl presses a button on the machine which causes the steel pillars to open and spread out on the ground. Linda walks into the center of the machine as the sun sets and the full moon rises. Tech Girl puts the hair under a microscope as the moonlight began to shine. Linda starts shaking. Fur grows on her expanding body. Tech Girl calmly presses a button without looking up from the microscope and the machine fires up and the three steel pillars rise back up from the ground. Electricity surges through them as they produce a spherical forcefield around Linda. The hair under the microscope begins to change. The sphere rises above the ground as Linda’s jaw size increases completing her transformation.

Tech Girl takes some notes looking back at Linda who is looking around anxiously. She looks at her huge hands as she howls. Tech Girl puts on a huge mechanical glove and walks over to the forcefield. She sticks her hand through it and plucks another hair from Linda who screams in pain. Tech Girl calmly takes her hand out of the forcefield as Linda begins attacking it. Her eyes land on Jeremiah and her attacks’ ferocity increase.

Jeremiah goes into a fighting stance as Linda attacks the field. Her claws penetrate it, but it regenerates the moment after. She keeps trying to tear the field to shreds but with no luck. Linda eventually tires out and plops down in the field. Tech Girl is completely engrossed in her work. Nothing could possibly disturb her.

Jeremiah says, “I can’t believe it held.”

“Are you doubting my work?” asks Tech Girl annoyed.

“No. It’s just…you think something would go wrong resulting in a climatic final battle,” explains Jeremiah haphazardly.

Tech Girl stops for a brief moment, puts down her notebook, and takes a deep breath. She walks up to Jeremiah and places her hand on his shoulder.

“Not everything needs to end in a battle. Sometimes everything does go according to plan. Usually the details are different but remember, cherish the moments of peace for as often as they come,” inspires Tech Girl.

She takes her hand off Jeremiah’s shoulders and goes back to work. Jeremiah stares at Linda reflecting on Tech Girl’s words.

Somewhere in the Sinnoh region,

“Sir, the ship is loaded for tomorrow’s delivery.”

“Very good.”

The old man grabs his briefcase and leaves.
