The year had begun with weather changes that some viewed as omens of things to come, rainstorms in dry-land, heatwaves in the north, and winter-like feel in the south, others simply read it as natural planetary changes. Climate change was a constant topic on the news but nothing on the media could have prepared us all; for the Darkest day that lay ahead.

The cloud passed thru the land with all of its dehydrated particles, just like it had happened many times before but this time it was different. We were warned about the Sahara desert storm that was coming across the ocean. It may aggravate allergies and cause respiratory issues the reporter said, we were told to stay indoors if there was a dust cloud insight wear a mask if going out, and maybe we chose to take it lightly or ignore the advice, after all the last time this happened, all we got was fish and frogs that rained in some cities, as an explanation we were told that it was fish and frog eggs that had been dehydrated by nature and hatched in the clouds as moisture changed their environment but no one suffered any illness. Some people had believed that the fish and frog rain was a higher power telling us to slow down and smell the roses. The rest of us were amused at the sight of such an unnatural event and the way science and nature work.

This time it was different; it was quiet, invisible and it just waited for a good rainstorm to grow and spread. Evolution was to be seen at full speed.

Our lives were changed during the cleanse, loved ones were lost, animal life almost wiped out, plants now produced poison, the few edibles that remain are kept in greenhouses to protect them from the parasite that came to destroy all our crops and by connection our lives. We began to get sick and drop like flies, the only way to stop it was to inoculate a few to secure that some would survive. We became immune to the parasite but carry it with us. The day the storm began the skies were blue, the sun was out and even though the winds were blowing hard there wasn’t a cloud in sight. The news reported the storm to have died at sea that it had dissipated and the next weather change may just bring a heatwave in some areas and rain in others. Yes, the rains came and it was a worldwide rainstorm that passed thru the entire earth in one month. And once the rain stopped; populations began to get sick, plants began to die and animals just dropped. In the blink of an eye we went from millions of habitants per country to only hundreds across the globe. It was over, it was the end of life as we knew it. Except for the ones who were always exploring unseen worlds, the scients who had built underground labs and green houses to protect us form global warming. They had hope for a few.

As nature has it there were pregnant woman across the land and we had a chance to give birth to the last nurtured humans, only a few of the moms had a safe pregnancy, and with them is my child, one of the wonder babies born after the parasite had been discovered as the cause of the cleanse, she was in the last group of 666 children that were born across the world with no trace of the parasite, after testing and verification they were taken from us, never to be seen again in person, only thru video chat.

The group of lab survivors who had found a vaccine that would help keep the parasite from spreading with hopes to eradicate began work to build safe houses, and clinics but as time passed it was obvious that it could not be killed but possibly controlled. So long as the infected were kept away from contact with the healthy ones. The new colonies in the safe place are accounted for, the ones outside keep their own count but it has become irrelevant to the lab leads.

As of the last count in the lab, the human life was up to 705 almost at a 50 /50 (female/male) ratio. My child is now 5 years old, I have only seen her via video and it makes me happy to know that there is hope for her future, she received the heart-shaped locket that belonged to my great grandmother, she can only see it inside the snow globe. I gave it to the tech the day she was born; it holds a picture of my great grandmother and my grandfather, I also recorded a video telling her about her ancestors, the family on both sides can be traced as far back as the early 1800s, my daughter's name is Esperanza (Hope) to mark the feeling we all held the day we were told to give her up. She knows my name and has been told about the reason why we can’t be together, all the children are being told about the great day of darkness, the day that a cloud passed thru invisible; hiding in the wind, that is all that we knew. Those of us who survived after the vaccine, have been living in small communities where we became new families with people that we had never met before the cleanse. In our new groups we have no race or color, we have no cultural hatred, we speak of renewal, and moving forward, and maybe sometime in the future enjoying fresh fruit, our food is made for us in the bubble and sent out via packages same with some garments to wear made from synthetic material as any natural fiber may be contaminated with the parasite.

The outer communities can only dream to one day see the rebuild of our land. Our children will grow to build new bubble homes and have new families that will have a whole new take on life, as parents on the outside of the bubble we can only hope that they feel a little love for those they can only see on a monitor.

The parasite that came in the particles of the wind, has a lethal process of taking over the host. It will absorb all the nutrients in a natural environment plant, animal, or human. We can only keep it at bay by consuming food that has been cooked and contains no protein. That is also part of the slow descent process. No protein, no long-term life. We wait, we hope, and with us, the organic killer remains……..

I am a nature loving person who finds the indoors quite suffocating after a while, I find inspiration in the beauty of a mountain, the flight of a bird or the soft swaying of a flower in the wind.
